Q: Greetings everyone!

The last month or so, the computer hell.

I am hving many BSODs (IRQ not less or equal to, page fault in nonpaged NON AREA, kmod EXCPETION not treated, BAD POOL HEADER, NTFS file system). . almost everyone . = (

Most of ntoskrnl.exe and win32k.sys BSODs had a hard time in them.

Ive startup, my computer wouldnt evem message when my CD-ROM drive connected.

Oh yes, I mention random lock-ups? = (

_____________________________________________

Well, I formatted, and im still getting the same problems! ack!
I am sure my mobo has some debt (freezes in the BIOS during startup, random reboots) 0.
. Sometimes my video will just go out without any warning, and my computer will frozen.

However, can anyone tell me if my hard drive (or other device) can fail to judge by the problems I mentioned above?

Heres my Rig System:

CPU: AMD Athlon T-Bird @ 1400MHz 1400MHz

Motherboard: Soyo SY-K7V Dragon

Memory: 256 MB PC 2100 crucial

Video Card (Nvidia GeForce2 Ultra 64 MB DDR)

Hard Drive: Maxtor 20.0 GB @ 7200 RPMS

Monitor : 17 inch

CDROM u0026 Manufacturer Model: 50X CD-ROM

Storage Interface: IDE

Sound Card: Mobo with Integrated Sound

Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional 977 503 977 503
____________________________________________

Thanks for taking the time to read this .

Oh, BTW: Please post all information and Soyo dealing with getting a replacement Mobo . or can I?

Re:<< [i]About IDE configuration: Hard drive always on IDE channel 1 ALONE or with another hard drive. CDROM /DVD/CDRW on IDE channel

<< [i]

Like I mentioned before my computer had a hard time booting, this was my temporary soultion.

Oh, thanks for the information on RMA.

Re:About IDE configuration: Hard drive always on IDE channel 1 ALONE or with another hard drive. CDROM /DVD/CDRW on IDE channel 2.

<< How long would it take to get a new mobo from soyo, anyways? Just curious, ive called soyo several times and ive tried to contact their tech support but i get nothing but waiting for a long time waiting for a representitive… and they never pick up. Ack. Oh wel, will call them tomorrow again. >>

I had to RMA a board to ECS in Fremont and I live in Los Angeles. It took 3 days. They told me a week (I brought it to the vendor I bought it from. They have 1 year on their boards, so they paid for shipping). Looks like Soyo is in Fremont also, but you gotta ask them for their own turn around time on RMAs.

Re:Im getting a lot of those "windows is missing a file blah blah"…. very similar to your problem. (Now that I think about it, its almost identical to your error guy.) Ive had to use the bootdisks and repair win windows 2000 installation SEVERAL times. I plan on running scan disk soon… and im pretty sure my CPU temps are lower then 60 now. I took those temps in a case with bad ventilation. Now I have a fan blowing right on to my heatsink, so im guessing my temps SHOULD be lower than that. I plan on underclocking my CPU soon just to be sure also.

Ill post again once I run scandisk and find out my results, thanks.

I just noticed this… it seems that my system is a litle more unstable with my CD-ROM plugged in… maybe just my imagination though.
If my CD-ROM is in IDE 2, i have the HARDEST time getting my mobo to post (had to turn computer off and on, cant restet anymore, broke the button from using it so many times. So, I had to put my CD-ROm drive on IDE 1 and my HD on IDE 2. The computer freezes with both configurations so eh.

Just a side note: Arent the promise fast track drivers only important if im using a RAID config? I donno.

How long would it take to get a new mobo from soyo, anyways? Just curious, ive called soyo several times and ive tried to contact their tech support but i get nothing but waiting for a long time waiting for a representitive… and they never pick up. Ack. Oh wel, will call them tomorrow again.

Oh, BTW everybody, i REALLY REALLY REALLY appreciate your time spent on helping me on this problem.

Jason

Re:that really sounds like RAM related to me, RAM is one of the causes for that BSOD you were getting, and freezing booting up is also a good sign of bad RAM, I would try it with a known good stick, unless your hdd has been making aweful clicking/grinding noises, then it may be the hdd.

Re:<< I know its not a heat problem (CPU temps never go higher than 63 (C) >>

Yeah, 63C is pretty high…might be causing your instabilities, and that bad install of win2k… so just to be sure it's not the CPU….Try SWAPPING for a slower one or UNDERCLOCK that 1.4ghz to 1.1ghz via lowering the multiplier.

<< PS. Yeah, I cant even boot now. Computer freezes in the exact same spot of Win2k booting….. Hooray… Now im almost positive its my HD. >>

RUN scandisk or some sort of hard drive fitness test just to be sure.

When my hard drive failed, I got this at boot up under WIN XP.

"Windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt: /windows/system32/config/system"

Frequent lock ups in desktop, 52 badclusters in Scandisk, and eventually I wans't able to format or install an OS anymore.

Good luck and I hope everything works out!

Re:Make sure that you are working the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional operating system with all required patches and service packs installed in the following order. Windows 2000 Pro with the Promise FastTrak drivers, Win2K Service Pack 2, Microsoft Windows 2000 AGP patch for the AMD Athlon, VIA 4in1 drivers version 4.32, DirectX 8.0a, NVIDIA 12.41 WHQL video drivers.

Re:63C is considered pretty high (Probably too high, but not sure for that mobo).

Want to hear a possibility? Your processor is running unstable. During boot it causes a minor instability as your reading your hard drive and it in turn causes a bad file. Now you have a bad install that crashes at the same place from corrupt data.

It could still be many things, I wouldn't focus so much on the mobo with temps like your showing. Try to get them down to the mid 50's and then reload from backup if you have one. Otherwise the hard way.

I know your not overclocking, but if I remember correctly it is pretty easy to trash a Win2000 load with an unstable processor (AMD's seem to be pretty unstable after a certain temp).

Anyway, you could try RMAing the mobo, but it may not be the problem. The hard drive probably is not be the problem either. (Usually doesn't crash in bios with a bad hard drive, since it isn't reading data from it yet). It does sound like you trashed your install of Win2000 though…….:(

Good luck man.

(If you have ASII or III, you should try the simplest of things first and remount your heatsink).

Re:Thanks guys… Oh yeah, i fogot to update my system specs… im using a 400 W power supply.

I know its not a heat problem (CPU temps never go higher than 63 (C) on MBM) and im pretty sure its now memory (ran mem tester with no errors)

I've added no new hardware recently…. so im guessing HD failure and a bad mobo.

Anybody ever dealt with soyo?

PS. Yeah, I cant even boot now. Computer freezes in the exact same spot of Win2k booting….. Hooray… Now im almost positive its my HD.

Re:Well it's definately a hardware problem. Do as someone said, start swapping components. Start with RAM first.

-guy

Re:In addition to what others have said, have you installed any new hardware recently? After I installed a crappy daytek/daewoo internal dsl modem my isp sold us, i started getting frequent bsod's with the irql_not_less_or_equal crap..

Re:If you can't afford a new PSU right now. Try swapping CPU's and see if your problems go away. There could be a slight chance memory is bad run mem tester on your memory. And at the end of the list the motherboard might be giving you the instabilities. (DAMN, I listed almost every component;):o)

From what I think is the most likely culprit to the least: (And assuming your running the latest drivers on everything, with a bare minimum configuration [i.e. hdd/video/ram/cdrom/cpu])
1. Heat (Common problem with 1.4s)
2. Power (Common problem with 1.4s, & your CDrom problem)
3. Hard Drive (Based on your symptoms) <~~ ALSO IF YOU'VE been running this setup FINE for a while now, this could be MOST LIKELY.
4. Memory <~~~ Or this
5. Motherboard (If all else checks out OK, then this is your culprit)

edit: HEY! IF YOUR MOTHERBOARD allows, try underclocking that 1.4GHz to 1.1GHz. My friend was able to resolve his problems by running at lower speeds. Thus proving it was a power/ heat problem.

Re:<< CPU: AMD Athlon T-Bird 1400MHz @ 1400MHz >>

These guys run really HOT! And requires a really good Power Supply. Try upping the PSU to 340watt +. And make sure you have really good cooling.

Other than that, I might say you Hard Drive is failing. Run Scandisk using a boot disk, and check if you're getting any errors.

Re:Have you checked your heatsink/fan? I mean gone the full route and cleaned it out (air or more thorough method) and checked your thermal compound? If your using the pad, you will need to decide to switch to thermal compound anyway if you pull the heatsink off. Pads are one-time use. You could also be dealing with memory or any other component that can affect the data path to the processor. Thats typically the processor (itself), motherboard, memory, even the drives to a limited extend can bring this kind of error state. Or it can even be something that can affect all of the above – the powersupply. It kinda has to be hardware since your locking up in bios.

If your heatsink is fine and your cpu temps are decent. Then you may want to start swapping components like memory, processor, hard drive one at a time (if you can) and see if it makes any difference.

If you can, post your temps (ambient ~, system, cpu) and your voltages in bios or if your running MBM or some other monitoring software, preferably under full load condition.

Q: I have a new router and his research into the safety of routers. Ive noticed that a few consumer routers have SPI as a security feature.

Is SPI is important for a home user? Is it worth the extra $ $ for this position?

The routers that Ive found with this feature Linksys WRT54G and GS and Motorola BR700 (wired). Everyone seems to LinkSys, but I can not find many impressions for the BR700 router. Does anyone have any experience with Motorola routers? The BR700 is cheaper than the WRT54G-GS routers?

Thanks.

Re:I'm glad I could help.

I have never dealt with the motorola routers, but if they are of the same quality as their cable modems then they should be fairly decent. I've heard good things about the WRT54G, so if my choice was between the two I might be inclined to go with that one. Personally, I am very fond of the ZyXel Prestige 334W I've been using lately. It has SPI and a bunch of other features. I am not sure of the price though, I got it free .

My main firewall though is a Cisco PIX 501 that sits right behind my cable modem. As far as firewalls go, that's pretty much "it" right there, in my opinion. The price might be a few hundred dollars above what you're looking to spend though.

Re:Thanks guy. Your reply was first rate. It really cleared things up for me.

I was wondering what router do you use?

I am thinking about getting the Motorola BR700 (price at NewEgg $53.00) a wired router. It has SPI/NAT and other security features that I am interested in getting. I was also looking at the Motorola WR850G (price at WalMart $54.50), it lacks SPI. WalMart also has the LinkSys WRT54G for $60.00 it has SPI.

If you were going to get one of these three routers which would you go for? Considering quality, reliabilityand support issues.

PS. At this point in time a have no need for wireless, just adds some future proofing. But, by the time I might need wireless things will be completely different.

Re:Link to: Cable/DSL Routers – NAT, Ports, SPI. (http://www.ezlan.net/routers1.html)

:sun:

Re:Originally posted by: davehries
Thanks for the info.

I also use ZoneAlarmPro and according to one of ZA guru's, ZAPro has SPI as a security feature. So, if true, as long as I use ZAPro I don't have to be concerned about finding or using a router that has SPI.

This is true to some extent. SPI on a network-level device certainly has it's benefits (and drawbacks) to having SPI-based firewalling software on the host system itself.

With the software on your system, your machine is still getting hit with that traffic that might otherwise be blocked. This will always increase resource usage on your system as the firewall software processes that traffic against it's ruleset. The resource hit might be very little or it might be a lot, but it will be there. Also, as long as you have those packets hitting your NIC, you're opening yourself up to the possibility that one of those packets could exploit a vulnerability in your firewall software, thus potentially making it useless.

Generally when packets are processed at a network-level firewall, there is less risk of it exploiting something in the firewall software and getting around it provided that the firewall is properly configured. That has been my experience, anyway. General thinking is that you want to limit exposure to your PC as much as possible. By putting the firewall on your PC you aren't doing anything to limit it's exposure, you're just relying on that software to block out the bad stuff.

The major downside to using something at the network level is that you dont usually get the granularity in rules that you'd get from something residing on the end system. Unless your firewall is extremely intelligent, you are usually limited to just opening and closing ports to permit applications. At that point, most firewalls dont care what application uses that port, just that something is allowed to use it.

Because I know what's on my PC and what is running at all times, I dont really care too much about having personal firewall software on my PC. A good SPI-based hardware firewall filtering out stuff at the gateway works better for me. I do run firewall software on my laptop in addition to the hardware firewall I have at home though. But that is because my laptop is a critical business resource and it sees a lot of different public-access networks as well. I never trust other peoples networks.

Re:just bought this wireless router (http://airlink101.com/downloads/images/ar315w_manual.pdf) from Fry's for $18 and it has SPI built in….

Re:Thanks for the info.

I also use ZoneAlarmPro and according to one of ZA guru's, ZAPro has SPI as a security feature. So, if true, as long as I use ZAPro I don't have to be concerned about finding or using a router that has SPI.

I just hope that the Guru knows what he is talking about. I can't find any reference to SPI in the ZA docs.

Re:In a nutshell, SPI will block any uninvited inbound traffic. Inbound will only be allowed as a response to a request from an inside source).

It won't help with P2P because the client "invites" the other streams in to participate in your file service process.

You can allow outside-initiated traffic by opening the specific port and providing the specific information.

FWIW

Scott

Re:SPI would be helpful if you had roommates who were using p2p applications and you didnt want them too. Might be a lil over the top for the home user though.

Q: The “Show volume icon in the taskbar” is checked. But, I experience an error on this icon will appear during my first run of the day. To set the icon to appear, I have the box, click Apply, check and uncheck the box then click OK. I am the administrator and sole user of my machine. It is password protected. During occasional reboots, which can happen throughout the day, the icon seems to appear as it should. It is not 100% and I am not able to figure out a cause-effect relation to why. In addition, some items in my Start Up folder not start on the taskbar. Ive re-select the Start menu just for them to do. I did a search on this subject right here at AnandTech, and get no hits. There is no Knowledge Based article about this exact problem with Microsoft. I got help from MS Tech Support and they thought it might be a bug in the SP-1. They proposed to remove my password, reboot, then reinstall the password again to start another. This did appear to resolve the issue, but the cure is not stick. Anyone else experience this? Other than waiting for SP-2 or removal of SP-1, does anyone have a suggestion to try? I can live with it, but its damn annoying!: Frown:: confused:

Re:sorry you had to do it , but glad it worked . i've had that before with 98 i think and reinstall was all i could do too.

Re:guy, I finally took your suggestion to reload the OS. I did a clean install on a new FAT 32 partition. I reinstalled all Windows Updates, drivers and programs. The case of the missing Volume Icon is solved. Thanks for your help.

Re:man , i hate to say it but sometimes it's just the quickest way to deal with windows most bizzare problems : repair\reinstall
good luck

Re:guy, I tried your suggestion. There is no problems reflected in Device Manager regarding sound or any other area. All say they are working properly, enabled with no IRQ conflicts. Sound card drivers are current for my SBLive Platinum card. Thanks.

Re:have you looked at the device manager when the volume icon disapears to see if there are any problems with the sound card ?
if it is a problem with Plug and Play detection you might be back to a repair.
good luck

Re:guy, I did not know that tip. It works perfectly. Thanks.

Re:have you tried powering up the scanner then in device manager>scan for hardware changes?
works for my non scsi scanner!

Re:guy, I can run all day without a reboot. However, there are occations when I might reboot during the day. One common reason is my scanner. I do not need it running all day long. Since it is a SCSI device, the OS will not recognize it by simply powering it up. A reboot is necessary for it to operate correctly with its software. Another common reason I might reboot is due to a Windows Update. Recently, MS sent an update in response to a worm virus that hit the internet. Crashes with Win XP Pro SP-1 are rare. Your suggestion to do a repair implies a corrupted sndvol32.exe file. MS has a KB article on this, but I do no fit the exact criteria. It suggests expanding the sndvol32.exe from the installation CD. This is far easier than doing a full repair. However, this file behaves normally for me. I do not get an error message of any kind, as is implied in the KB article.
guy, thanks for confirming I am not alone on this. If installing or uninstalling Universal Plug & Play is the trigger, then it is a bug MS needs to know about. I believe you would need to power down your system to confirm this. What is strange is that the behavior of this icon is different with a restart versus a shutdown. It's a mystery.

Re:well i dont know if this is a bug or if its just my machine but when i install upnp (universal plug and play) support my volume icon doesnt show up when i boot. if i uncheck "show volume in system tray", click apply, then recheck it, and click apply it comes back up.

Re:During occasional reboots that may happen throughout the workday, the icon seems to appear as it should. However, it is not 100% and I am unable to figure out a cause/effect relationship is there a reason your rebooting durring the day ? if your having to , due to other problems , the volume icon may just be a symptom of something else. if so a repair install might help.
good luck

Q: I have a new server and want to move a ton of files from an old to new. The only problem is, the permissions do not meet. I used a free tool called strarc and pulled the files and permissions but craps about half the files so it does not work. If the business is a win2k box to win2k3

Best Answer: OK, so basically when a file is once in the public folder, it then retains the public rights?

The private folder, once the file is MOVED into the private folder, the user who owns that folder should only have access to view what's in that folder to begin with. The file will most likely retain rights to be read and modified by anyone, but if it's in a folder that is only accessible by a specific user, they should not be able to see it.

Is the server a DC and are the workstations a part of the domain?

You can email me if you need further assistance with this, I work with Server 03 and AD, group policy everyday.

Re:Are you shutting the monitor down via the bios or the os?

Re:Any more ideas?

Please?

Re:I have the most recent driver for the G400. Before, I was using an ADI MicroScan 6p (also with the correct drivers), and the computer did the same thing. I've also tried several 15" monitors I have laying around. It's not the monitor, but thanks anyway.

Re:It sounds like you don't have the right driver for the monitor, but I'm just guessing at that. Try downloading a driver from the monitor manufacturers web site. See what that does.

If I had the problem I would try another monitor.

any suggestions? good shops?

oh and I want to stay away from Compaq, Dell and all the other computers store .

thanks in advance

Re:well, there are definitely are alternatives to Dell that are pretty decent, among them:

http://www.abspc.com/

http://cyberpowersystem.com

Re:Dell. That's the option for your needs. End of story.
Go here www.gotapex.com for Dell deals. The above deal is not good. You can do far better. I've seen the 4600 going for 239.00

Re:well like this one, is that really a hot deal?

Dell Dimension 4600 Desktop, P4 2.8GHz, 512MB, 40GB, 48x CD-RW, XP Home ? only $569.00 + Free Shipping

Re:Originally posted by: guy
anybody else thinks "dude, you gotta get a dell" ?

I do, only if it's a hot deal though

Re:i just never liked dells policy.. i mean this goes like 5-6 years back..but this whole "you wont need more then what we give you" approach.. like i remember dealing with a dell a while back and it was a pain.. maybe things change..

anybody else thinks "dude, you gotta get a dell" ?

Re:> oh and i want to stay away from the compaq, dell and all those other instore computers..

Why? For a work machine, a Hot Deals Dell is hard to beat, especially if you want a legal copy of Windows. Since you don't need gaming, you could get one of the small and quiet boxes too.

Thanks

Re:If you have a Fry's Electronics nearby, they offer decent prices on this equipment. I paid $49 for a spool of CAT5 1000 feet, and only $7 for 50 CAT5 cable ends. Also picked up some crimpers for only $12.

Re:I have seen the stranded CAT 5 cable, I've not used crimp on RJ45's with it.
You might need a different connector to get a positive connection on the stranded CAT 5 cable.

Click here for a basic RJ45 crimper that will do the job with 100 plugs, for $13.50 (http://www.pccables.com/cgi-bin/orders6.cgi?action=Showitem&id=ID325853&partno=210 00a&search=TOOL&rsite=www.pccables.com&rcode=)

Q: I try a Unix hard drive was an external drive to open. is there a way to attach to an IDE channel in an XP box to open the files?

if I do not assume that the disk format will not be difficult to correct?

Best Answer: Disk 0 (first drive) error indicates that the first drive in the computer have errors. Seems to me that you are familiar with BIOS. When you boot up the system, does it show the hard disk on the list as detected (it should show the capacity of the drive)?

With running windows setup, looks like it detected your drive. It should give you several options to install. Select the one where it allows you to create the partition and format.

If you have a windows 98 boot disk or msdos, download a disk diagnostic utility from the manufacturer of the hard drive. Boot the computer with a win98 or dos, and run the diagnostic. This should give you a good report if the drive is indeed good or bad.

Re:using knoppix could be helpful for this.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
If its ext2 or Reiserfs, you can read it from Windows.
http://sssup1.sssup.it/~pit/reiserfs.html

Have you used that, or was it the result of a google search? It hardly looks usable to me, but I may not be understanding it.

I've used ext2fsd: http://sys.xiloo.com/ or http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd/ and it works well. All you have to do is load the driver from the CLI then mount the partition to a drive letter and two commands and you're off, and you can read and write from any windows application.

Re:If its ext2 or Reiserfs, you can read it from Windows.
http://sssup1.sssup.it/~pit/reiserfs.html

Re:If it's not FAT or NTFS (read only) your best (only?) bet is to put it back in the "unix" box, then export it as a Windows share via Samba.

Re:You'll need to be more specific, by Unix do you mean Linux, Solaris, AIX, OpenServer, Tru64, etc? But in general, there's no unix filesystems available for Windows for a few reasons. MS won't develop any, the MS IFS development kit costs way too much money and it's a huge PITA to write one without it.

Re:Originally posted by: guy

Originally posted by: guy
Depends what file system was used. If it was an external drive, there is a fair chance it was formatted FAT32. Plug it in and see. If not, then it should be easy enough to reformat (losing all the data of course)

i wasn't aware that unix uses FAT32…

"Unix" is a pretty generic term.
Linux at least, can use FAT32. It's not the native filesystem of choice, but it works.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
or connect the external hd to a windows computer and share it.

Use the smbclient on linux to connect to the share.

sorry should have made it clearer, we're not the most unix savvy people on the world. is there way, if its not formatted in FAT or NTFS, that we could access the data form the XP GUI? am I wrong to assume that it would be formatted in something other than FAT or NTFS?

Re:Originally posted by: guy
Depends what file system was used. If it was an external drive, there is a fair chance it was formatted FAT32. Plug it in and see. If not, then it should be easy enough to reformat (losing all the data of course)

i wasn't aware that unix uses FAT32…

Re:or connect the external hd to a windows computer and share it.

Use the smbclient on linux to connect to the share.
The first half covers the basics of the language C + +, and the second half covers the basics of Windows programming. Ive messed aroung with QBasic and Visual Basic. I know Pascal. This is my first Endevor in C + +. My problem is the book has exercises, but not enough. Im not very far yet. I went to functions, arrays, pointers and references. The thing is that I understand what is in the book, but when it comes to writing my own programs, Im stumped. I have not programmed in a while, and I lost mentality. I can not quickly rattle the syntax of my mind. I need a lot of basic programs written to do to drill into my head. I would like to know where I can have some descriptions of the programs I could find to write, and then maybe check my code against any “correct” code. Does anyone know where I can find a site like this. I appreciate any help.

Re:Here is a great little site for beginners and advanced C++ addicts CPP-Home (http://contests.cpp-home.com/). They run a few coding contests with varing levels of difficulty (beginner to advanced), although most of them involve solving or finding mathematical expressions using C++. They include the winner's code for the past contests. They also have C++ tests for those coders who think they know it all about the language and beginners. There's a few tutorials too. Check it out, the contests may seem a little tough at first for a beginner, but you will only learn by challenging yourself, and this is a good place to start.

Re:Just try to do some simple mathematical things.

Write things like fake drink machine programs, where the person can insert dime, nickel, quarter, etc. The machine counts that up and then will give them back the right change in the fewest amount of coins (better excercise would be to keep track of the coins inserted. at first you have no change so the customer has to have exact change. after a few drinks have been bought the machine can dispense only change that it has).

write a paper, rock, scissors game. It's a very simple concept that should be fun.

Little bank programs for just calculating interest over a period of time is good practice too. Right now in the early stages I'd say it's more important to get a grasp on how the language works in a general sense than to delve into a really complicated project (though I remember years ago a guy who learned either C or C++ just to write an SNES emulator. that's dedicated ). Do try and get some specific focus on things though. Be sure to practice file i/o, and especially your data structures (Multi-dimensional arrays, self-balancing trees, hash tables, B-trees, stacks, heaps, queues, etc. too many people just learn to use a list or an array in all cases. learn which one works best for different problems).

After you get the basics down and these little programs feel beneath you then you definately want to try some of guy's suggestions (the maze problem was fun way back when I did it). You might also want to try some of the classic problems like towers of hanoi (look it up). I think I've done all of those in either C++ or Java EXCEPT the Roman numeral class (that's a new one on me ).

Re:Originally posted by: guy
hmmm, most of the things you mentioned are beyond my level. I know only the basic things like arrays and functions. I really need practice. Maybe I should get a short book focus on learning the basics of C++.

That would be advisable

Re:Originally posted by: guy
I am still learning the standard C++. I know I could think of some random things to code in my head, but I would rather have an assignment with specific goals. Thanks

Have you done all the regular projects? Here is a list of simple projects I did in my introductory C++ course (2nd semester):
- A Complex number class w/ implementation for operators like +/-/division/mul etc.
- A search/sorting program allowing the users to perform binary search
- A calculator program using the aforementioned complex number class
- A linked list implementation (not using templates)
- A doubly linked list imp.
- A Roman Numberal class (operator support provided) – uses the doubly linked list class
- A stastics program that reads a file and gives stats for #ofwords, #ofsentences, #ofparagraphs etc.
- An address book program that reads a file -> writes sorted output as well as performs search for names etc.
- A Maze solving program. Maze is defined using a file with the starting and ending positions defined. Output is the list of steps to solve the maze

All the assignments above were pretty vague as far as the specification to allow the student maximum freedom in implementation.

Re:Are you using the 'Visual' part of VC++ (MFC etc.) or just doing standard C++? What helped me, when I was learning, was trying to do projects that would be useful for me in everyday computer use. Then I would go off learning the part where I was stuck at. It's not the fastest way to learn, but in the long run it pays off quite well.
