Q: Can a hub be used to exchange files between two computers and DSL, when connected to the LAN port on a switch?

Here? S what I have:
Currently a DSL line is shared by using a modem / router connected to an (unmanaged) switch, all computers? s are connected to the LAN ports on the switch. In one office there are two of the PC? S that is the DSL and files, but with a small hub parts. So . I would plug the line from the switch to the WAN port on the hub and connect the two computers? S in the hub. Should work, eh?

The two clients could still use the same IP configuration, I believe?

I know the hub is required to share files with the switch would work.

Re:Another switch would be a better soulution but the hub will work:D

Re:but if you use a hub, you are sharing your bandwidth with other people that is connected to the hub. y not get another 8 port switch.

Re:With the hub plugged into one of the LAN ports on the router, it will be transparent to the users, they should have normal access.

Re:let's say there is only one line in this office coming from the switch.

they would still be behind the firewall. the hub they would plug into would be plugged into the switch.

i realize the hub is not needed. i am wondering if this would work. will the two clients each get an ip and internet from the router as they currently do? seems like they should except it's just going through a hub.

Re:Don't put computers directly off of the dsl, they'd be without a firewall.

Why can't you just plug those two computers into the existing switch, is there a need to have them directly connected to the dsl?

Or should I go with the traditional way:
1. Extract from an ISO folder
2. Delete the file I do not need.
3. Burn the entire folder back to CD R.
4. Use a program to an ISO of the CD to create R.

thanks

Best Answer: Hi

Well, you should definitely install Windows XP SP3.

Your computer is affected with Virus, it might be possible it is filled with Trojans etc which can steal your passwords etc.

So its better that you don't log in into your mail account etc because very strong possibility that that passwords will be stolen by trojan's and soon your account will be stolen.

Install Windows XP SP3 >> Install Windows Updates >> Install a good Anti-Virus to prevent such situations again.

You can also install Ubuntu into other drive, Ubuntu does not have any virus things like Windows, so its better to have Ubuntu as backup O.S

Re:ultraiso is damn good

Re:i use ultraiso. never tried magiciso.

Re:Originally posted by: guy

I'm set. However, which program is better? MagicISo or UltraISO?

I'd also be interested in which program is better. I've abolished the floppy drive from my computers entirely. At present, I've got all the bootable CDs I need, but the ability to modify the ISOs with updated software etc would be a boon.

Re:It should work. I've edited ISOs directly using WinISO successfully before.

Re:Oh, I just notice that UltraISO (as well as MagicISO) can extract ISO into a folder, and also create an ISO from folder files as well.

I'm set. However, which program is better? MagicISo or UltraISO?

Re:Just try it using UltraISO and save the modified ISO under a different name. If that doesn't work, then just do it the traditional way.

Re:Ahhh….right, missed that one…

Try using your vid card in the lowest possible resolution – i.e 256 colours, 640×480 – and see if it happens. If it shows normal then check to see if there are updated drivers – check Windows Update as well. Check the BIOS date – might be new BIOS that will take care of the problem too!

Re:guy…..The system specs are below the signature line……marked "My Mistress".

Thanks Halo….no using the English version. Recently added new mobo, proc and video card. Probably something there, as this never happened previously.

Re:What are your system specs….vid card, processor, mobo, OS etc. etc.

I have had some funky results when using particular video cards with particular operating systems…

Let us know what you are using and we might be able to help a little more.

Re:Do you use a non-english version? I've seen that happen quite often with other languages.
I really don't think there's a way around it, but then again, I never worried much about it.

I know it didn't help, but hopefuly it was informative.

Re:It comes awfully damn close to blocking the first PCI-E, but not quite. Though if I ever had to use that slot, I'd put an insulator on the back of the card at the point where the heatpipes threatened to touch it.

Other than that, I LOVE the way the XP-120 overhangs the RAM on the NF4 LP boards. It's free RAM cooling.

Re:The RAM fits under the heatsink neatly. I'm able to remove and replace it, even, with the heatsink attached. I have 2×1GB OCZ Platinum.

There is a great article/post with photos about this fitting on http://www.dfi-street.com

Re:Does it clear your ram on the other side? What ram are you running?

Re:I have the XP-120 on my DFI SLI-DR. It doesn't block any of the PCI-E x16 slots.

Re:I even called the guys at Thermalright and they said it would hit, I guess they don't know what ther're talking about. Are you using the SLI confi and have no problems with my model board? Are you using the si-120 or the xp-120?
Thanks

Q: I have the Netgear MR814 wireless router at the house of my friend and I get absurd dropouts in the connection. It will connect at 11 Mbps with an “excellent” signal strength (winXP), but after a few minutes, Windows will display connection. I wait about 10 seconds, click on “View all available wireless connections” and still force a connection. It will again, but drop out as the first time. This will be done and has enabled WEP with a 40bit over.

It kit, but this happens with WEP disabled. The laptop is a Toshiba Tablet PC with built-in WiFi, but this happens even with Cisco PCMCIA WiFi card.

It in the basement of my friend and it repeats the whole house, even if the laptop is right beside the router! What the heck is going on?

Best Answer: Probably Bust!!!

Re:Heh-heh. Thank you for the vote of confidence. Regarding my alleged wealth of knowledge — the funny thing is that, normally, I go straight to the MSKB when faced with strange behaviors like this. But, in this case, I just slogged it out to my initial conclusion (disabling WZC Service) by doing a little reasoning and setting up some experiments. I feel moderately pleased with myself for being able to figure that out on my own, but that is, after all, only a temporary solution. But now you are the second person (Naked Savage having been the first) to have notified me of that MSKB article, which is the article which prompted me to check the 802.1x authentication setting. I had just been dim-wittedly assuming that it was disabled since I knew that I had disabled it months ago after experiencing strange share access behaviors. I should have been smart enough to go all the way through the settings, something that is standard operating procedure for me — or for anyone who actually wishes to do a decent job of troubleshooting something.

But I do find it odd that the article asserts this:

"During the installation of SP1, any settings enabling 802.1x authentication for wireless connections will be removed."

because it doesn't seem to jibe with what happened to me. I'm certain that I didn't re-enable those authentication settings manually. I think that either the SP1 installation process or the application of some subsequent patch enabled them. I'd just shrug and attribute this to bad gray cells if I were talking about one machine, but I'm talking about four. I don't think I absent-mindedly re-enabled 802.1x authentication on four machines at home — not even on my flakiest day. I mean that the setting is in a kind of out-of-the-way place, and not something you just wander into while you're dealing with other issues.

Thank you for the information, and I'll look forward to hearing how this works out for you.

- guy

Re:prosiac:

You are a wealth of knowledge.. I was thinking for awhile that is was a bad wireless router. I'm excited to try this solution (disabled 802.11x) this weekend.

I stumbled upon this Microsoft article (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/bowman/02september09.asp) with this information which backs up what you said:

Windows XP SP1 also changes the default behavior of the 802.1x authentication setting when used on wireless networks. When this setting was enabled before applying SP1, if no authentication server was found, the setting was ignored and a persistent connection could be obtained. Stricter enforcement under SP1 prevents attaching to a rogue access point. If 802.1x authentication (which must be used with WEP) is enabled under SP1, if no authentication packet is received after three minutes, the connection will be dropped. During the installation of SP1, any settings enabling 802.1x authentication for wireless connections will be removed. If you find that you lose your connection every three minutes, authentication may be enabled on a network that does not have authentication servers.

I will definitely report back what happens in my tests this weekend.

Re:That's a good question. Let me tell you what I think I know — that is to to say, what I have actually experienced — with a few surmises thrown in.

I have had participated in several threads with people here and elsewhere in which this and similar behaviors were discussed. It appears that there are at least two fairly common issues which can lead to periodic disconnection of 802.1b wireless clients running under Windows XP. One of the issues seems to cause sporadic failure of the connection and periodic dips in network throughput during file transfers. That issue seems to be caused by poor firmware and / or driver design, and, so far, I've only seen users of the Linksys wireless clients complain of that behavior, though I'm certain others may experience it, too. Ostensibly, a fix for the Linksys firmware is due Real Soon Now (TM). The other issue appears to have cropped up with SP1 for Windows XP, and it seems to cause regular periodic disconnection with an announcement that there are wireless networks available (which means, of course, that you've been disconnected from the network to which you had been connected). The 802.1x authentication for wireless networks is enabled by default, but it doesn't apply to people with consumer-grade SOHO wireless routers like most of us use at home. These routers have no ability to use certificates, of course. In Windows XP prior to application of SP1 (or perhaps a combination of SP1 plus one of the subsequent security updates) leaving the 802.1x authentication feature enabled didn't seem to adversely affect the ability of wireless clients to use wireless routers in a reliable fashion for access to the Internet. Nevertheless, I had turned authentication off on my own machines because it appeared that it interfered with their ability to get access to shares on the LAN. Then I started noticing some problems in maintaining wireless connections following application of SP1, but they were tolerable. Then after I applied one of the recent security patches for IE I saw wireless connections become really unreliable — dropping every couple of minutes or so. Because of the behavior (with the client manager announcing the presence of wireless networks) I figured that it was the Wireless Zero Configuration Service that was causing the problem. I learned that disabling Wireless Zero Configuration after getting a connection enabled me to hold that connection trouble-free for as long as I wanted. In the course of discussing this issue with others online someone reminded me that SP1 had tightened down the authentication behavior for wireless clients. I went to the authentication setting and, sure enough, found that it had been re-enabled — apparently when I applied either SP1 or a subsequent patch. As soon as I turned off the authentication feature I found that all wireless connection functions returned to normal, and that it was no longer necessary to turn of the WZC service to maintain connections.

I don't think this exact behavior is actually intended by Microsoft, but I could be wrong. I hope someone who actually knows may be able to contribute some information. But I suspect that authentication is supposed to allow a wireless client to get to the Internet through a router even though it can't authenticate, and that authentication is supposed to be necessary only for acquiring access to shares on the network. My guess is that the periodic disconnection results from authentication continuing to look for a certificate server by having WZC look for "momma", but I could be dead wrong on that. However, if I'm wrong about this I'd like to know why turning the service off after getting a connection allows the client to maintain a wireless connection indefinitely.

Turning of the WZC Service appears to solve the wireless connection failure problem for people who have authentication turned on in the inappropriate setting (like the vast majority of home networks) and for many people who have problem drivers that aren't truly compatible with Windows XP and Wireless Zero Configuration. But, obviously, the better solution is either to turn off authentication or to get a better driver / firmware for the client, whichever applies to the given situation.

I hope you'll give this a shot and let us know how it turns out by post back to this thread.

Good luck!

- guy

Re:prosiac:

Thanks for the suggestions.

I checked my laptop config and noticed that 802.11x is enabled… I disabled it, but I won't have an opportunity to test it out until this weekend.

If this was causing hte problem, why would I have working connectivity for short periods? Is it because it's trying to authenticate via 802.11x and failing thus cutting the connection?

Re:Did you check to be sure that 802.1x authentication is disabled? (It's also best to set up the wireless connection to NOT connection to non-preferred networks and to connect only to infrastructure (no ad-hoc connections).

If that doesn't work you can try turning off the Wireless Zero Configuration Service after the wireless connection is first established. (Notice please that I said to turn the service off, NOT to disable it.) Just open a CMD prompt and type the command "NET STOP WZCSVC" (no quotes) and hit the Enter key. That's the quickest, easiest way to stop the service. It will restart when you either manually restart it or when you reboot the system. Normally you have to have the service running in order to establish a connection. I guess that when 802.1x authentication is turned on the WZC service keeps on looking for a server with certificates which might be why you keep getting disconnected.

But disabling the service isn't the best choice. The drivers and the client should work fine without disabling the service if you have the everything configured properly — and if they are compatible with the OS and WZC.

Re:anybody else? or can anyone recommend a game that has a demo?

Re:FS2004. A decent sim, but most of the aircraft that come default with the game are not terribly well modelled.

Added bonuse (but you need to spend more money): There are some reeeaally deep add-on commercial simulators for FS2004.
