File size transfer limit than NETBUI? [gb files] [network protocol]

Q: I recently had NETBUI to add a for my LAN. Now I can not transfer large files! I have a pair of 1-5 GB of files to move and I get an error everytime. Is there a limit?

You did not have to add NetBEUI to resolve names. It can help. Often does, but not necessary. If your LAN is small creating a static hosts file is the easiest way to resolve names. That is just if you want to use network places or use the NetBIOS name when using a UNC path or something. You can always search for and map using IP's instead of the computer name. NetBEUI, while pretty quick on small LAN's and is generally more secure than IP as it is not routable, has never been "necessary" on any network I have ever worked on, built, or used. It's basically a workaround method to users who insist on using the incredibly undependable Network Places/Neighborhood resolution tool. The exception being if you have WINS or DNS/AD setup on a domain model. Tends to clean things up in NPlaces. As nothingman has already stated/asked about, and you apparantly have ignored, "I get an error" doesn't cut it. Specify and detail your problems as you ask for help in solving them.

I understand. However, I used to not have any problems on my little peer-to-peer LAN. I could always see all the PC's and move files around. This problem suddenly appeared and I suspect a windows update. I don't know a lot about networking, but I do know a bit. WINS is disabled on each machine as there is no domain and it's not needed. All machines use DHCP and obtain their addresses from my router. I installed NETBEUI when the issue came up and I couldn't figure out the problem….it fixed everything for the most part.

Re:The file begins to copy, after a couple minutes I get an explorer error:

"Cannot copy whatever.mpg: An unexpected network error occurred."

I can copy a single 10MB file or even a batch of files that are 100MB total size with no problems. This is a 100Mbps LAN connected to a Linksys 10/100 switch. The only time I get the error is when moving these 1GB+ size files.

Re:From a previous post, this is why I had to add NETBUI:

I have a small 6 PC LAN on an 8-port switch with a Cisco 675 router (DHCP). I've always been able to browse using windows explorer to move files around. I haven't had to in awhile, so I don't know when the problem started…but I can't even see the Win2k PC's on my LAN now from any of the PC's (I can see the Win98SE one). I can ping them, but I can't see them in Windows Explorer.

I'm thinking one of the windows updates got me because that's all that changed, I keep all the PC's updated with all critical updates. Anyone know which one is the culprit?

EDIT – They also don't show in "Computers Near Me" nor in "Entire Network">"My Workgroup Name

I believe the error says "The file name is invalid.", I'll check when I get home and post here. I've tried this on a few different files. They are MPG TV recordings taken from my Leadtek TV Tuner. I've tried renaming the files, no help and I am able to move them from partition-partition and from drive-drive on the capture system….just not across my LAN.

Re:I've never heard of such a thing, I would assume another problem first. But before anyone can even guess what's going on you'll have to expand on "I get an error".
