Q: And? Im using the same leg for a while now (budget), and that I know of no problems.
Best Answer: What you have is sufficient……I would not pay BellSouth for firewall protection as there is no reason for it. The fact that the connection will be running through an external piece of hardware (the high speed modem) makes it, by definition, a hardware firewall…if it has wireless built-in then it'll have firewall settings built-in as well. If you have to get seperate equipment, i.e. your own wireless router, you will be doubling up on hardware firewalls, and the programs you already have are going to still be running the software firewall/anti-virus protection anyways. High speed connections are just a different way to connect to the internet, so if you feel you have protection through your dialup porgrams already installed, the only thing that is going to change is how you connect.
Wireless setup is fairly simple, you just need to turn on encryption and choose whether to have wep or wap encryption….wep is usually the default settings for most wireless router, and wap is simply more characters for the key….this will make more sense once you get the equipment. Be sure to read the manual and you'll be fine.

Re:I use an small old "dumb" firewall, Kerio 2.1.5. It works by training it. This can be a PITA, but is also it's strength. It's an ongoing upgrade of sorts. If things go bad, clear out the training and start over.
If you use one of the newer smart versions, the problem is they can be outsmarted as the bad guys get better at thier job. These may benefit from an upgrade.
In any case, having this additional layer of protection should limit your exposure to damage should your machine be compromised.

Re:Managing a firewall properly requires a lot more than common sense and that's not what I was talking about. If people used common sense and avoid visiting questionable sites, opening questionable attachments, etc there wouldn't be any need for an outgoing firewall in almost all cases.

Re:I think that is common sense vs. no common sense thing is just confusing the real issue—-what we all want is that holy grail—that firewall we can just install and forget.
Be it resolved— that holy grail does not exist and never will—any firewall need configured and maintained by a knowledgeable users—so any time that newer better than sex
and sliced bread firewall comes out we swap firewalls—exchanging the devil we never worked hard enough to know—for the devil that we don't know and won't bother to learn.
Hard ware firewall, software firewall, or both—–the issue is what can they do—what can't they do, and what it takes to make them work well is the issue.
And the choice is somewhat dictated by how hard the user is willing to work.—and what better options better firewalls offer to those who are willing to learn.

Your pc can still become infected no matter what kind of firewall you're using so outbound filtering is not that beneficial IMHO.
Your PC can become infected no matter what software you have installed, by your logic you might as well just turn the whole thing off and stop using it.

Re:I'd recommend upgrading to a cable/dsl router if you don't currently use one. Software firewalls that monitor outbound traffic are usually a PITA and bombard you with popups to all/deny connections. Your pc can still become infected no matter what kind of firewall you're using so outbound filtering is not that beneficial IMHO.

Re:ZA is a pain to update, I had to do a /clean and to fully get rid of the old TrueVector stuff before one on a client's machine would update. But yeh, if it has an upgrade, upgrade it.
Re:if you cant use a new version, check secunia or securityfocus for vulnerabilities for your firewall version.
