Q: Heres the info. Running XP Home on a Gateway P4 with 256 MB of RAM and NSW2003. Everything was fine until last Friday. My “Windows Udate” box popped up. Ive only chosen the “critical” class updates. They were like listed.
XPQ819696
XPKB823559
XKB823980
XPQ811493
XPKB821557
Windows V4
So updating the udates installed, I shut down and went to bed. Now my boot sequence is a follows.
I see the light flashing on the CD, DVD, floppy, keyboard, mouse.
The Gateway logo screen flashes, the progress of Windows appears and then it takes about 15 minutes for my wallpaper to show up. It lasts for about 3 hours for my desktop and tray bar and beginning to appear. Once theyre all there, everything works fine. No delay in the launch of Microsoft Office programs, surfing with IE or something else. I looked at Windows Task Manager and the memory was listed as:
Memory NSW Open 261424
Available 65390
Sys cache mem 154820
Kernal total: 52688
paged 33868
non paged 18820
I am not a techie, but I made what I think is relevant info . I was planning for a mobile PC repair Guy came to buy a boat three hours time, that would be very costly. Please note that any corrections indicates that a restart will lead to a level at least 3 hours more delay in my back to you. Device Manager is clean and I tried 3 previous system restore data. Does anyone have a smoking gun here?

Re:Thanks guy but that link seems to refer to a bunch of tweaks to speed up a machine that has been cluttered up with programs that are running in the background and over a period of time.. My boot time is much longer and happened over night..

Re:right click on my computer (may be on your start menu depending on your configuration) select explore. right click on your c: and select properties, the second tab is tools, click on it. then under error checking click check now, and check the two boxes under the check disk options, it will ask you if you want to do this on the next start up. tell it ok and then do a shutdown and restart and it will automatically run the same chkdsk /r sequence.

Re:guy
Yes I can boot to a dos prompt in safe mode but that will take 3 hours .. Is there anyway I can do the same thing where I am now without the reboot?

Re:can you boot to safe mode with a dos prompt?
if so key in (at the prompt) "chkdsk /r" without the " ", if prompted to reboot let it, it will check your hard disk for table, data, and free space errors.

Re:Hello Die Hardware… thanks for the reply. I have tried 3 previous restore dates.. no help.. There are no yellow conflict icons in the device manager… any other ideas?
Re:Any conflicts in Device Manager? (start–>control panel–>system–>hardware tab–>device manager). You could also try restoring the OS to a time earlier than the update (start–>programs–>accessories–>system tools–>system restore…pick a time/date prior to the update)
