I guess I could have referenced the dates to see which files are actually utilized, although not all the time of course.

Re:Depends on the shell, but I think export TERM=vt100 should work. HAvent had to do that for a little over a year :P

As far as .ssh, it depends on how sshd is setup. I dont do password authentication so I wouldnt want to get rid of ~/.ssh

you can literally loose them all. The ones you really need, will recreate themselves (bash will automatically remake .bash_history, .ssh will automactically be made when you accept new keys, etc)
the only ones i'm not so sure about, are the various email related ones.

You can get rid of all the x's and X's, twmrc (t window manager?). You can keep the pine stuff if you use it. It really depends on what you are planning.
