Q: I have an FTP server to install a service as I can on my XP system . Im using BulletProof FTP, but I do not think it supports running as a service . Maybe FTP Serv-U doing?
I dont want to run IIS because of all the virii that exist at the moment . So what can I use? : D
Best Answer: You have to setup Samba and yes I am going to tell you to go read the manual but here is a step by step manual, slightly dated but should get you going.
I would also suggest not doing such projects yourself unless you fully understand the technology and it's what the business pays you to do. The typical small office is much better served to have an outside vendor complete such task who knows the product. The reason for this is simple. If you take the time you have worked on this plus the mistakes you will make and the time they take to correct and actually give that time a value based on what you should have been doing to earn the business money most businesses will find that having outsourced the work is cheaper. Time is money and even in the small office taking time away from what makes the company money has a value and needs to be added into the cost of doing the deployment yourself.

Re:the latest version of serv-u (3.0) will run as a service on nt/2k/xp, but a drawback to running it as a service, network resources through serv-u are not available. it seems that is a con with all services running as local system.
i am using serv-u but have to run it in the startup folder due to this.

Re:That may work. But the issue is, this box has multiple users. People wont even be logged in 85% of the time. It needs to run even when people are not logged in.

Re:i run warftp as a service on my box….give it a try. it's newest versions have a ton of updates integrated that take care of all the security vulnerabilities, so it's a good program
