Q: Hi there
I have a lab with a T1 connection and static IPS (I mention them MYIPs). I used one of the IPs and an internal network with the help of a cheesy Linksys router.
This first internal network uses IP addresses from 192.168.1.2 – 192.168.1.154. It win2k server (192.168.1.2), which acts as a DNS server. Another machine with IP 192.168.1.5 is IIS FTP server. I opened the gate 21 for the FTP server on the router. (Router has the latest firmware)
I access netwoks first internal FTP server of my MYIPs machines. I can access it from home where I have DSL connection. But my friend (name – F1) from an isolated country is not able to access, but this same friend can access a different FTP server behind a router in AUSTRALLIA and many other FTP servers. So the problem is not with F1s machine.
To see if the problem is in the router, I open all ports to my FTP server IP (ie 192.168.1.5). Not work.
Can someone explain why?
MORE .
I a similar router with the latest firmware purchased using a different static IP address of the range of MYIPs. made a similar setup. This time, IP address – 10.1.1.1 – 10.1.1.254. Server IP: – 10.1.1.2. FTP server machine: – 10.1.1.5
IM HAVING SAME PROBLEMS.
MORE .
I not access ftp servers using my MYIPs both internal networks. I first internal network can not access FTP server of the second internal network machines and vice versa. I have all ports open for FTP routers servers.
Can anyone please enlighten me where I m making mistakes?
How can I resolve these issues.
Best Answer: Gads.. FTP is such a pain just through one router — would be crazy through two routers.
Why not change to useing sftp or scp instead? Much less of a pain and orders of magnitude more secure than FTP.
Re:Something else to check out might be if your friend is using passive or active mode and if he's behind NAT compared to how you're connecting and if you're behind some sort of NAT.
Re:Thanx.. That really helped. I think I have issues with IIS FTP.
Re:Take a look here:
Setting up an FTP server with Linksys. (http://www.linksysftp.org/)
Re:I forgot to mention that my friend (F1) can access FTP server machine that uses one of the MYIPs (static IPs). So it not the problem of my ISP.
Re:I am assuming you have port forwarding setup correctly and are using the IP address of the Linksys router to access the FTP server.
Try setting up a DMZ.
If that doesn't work you should ask who you're getting your IPs from.
