GF needs a new CPU / Mobo . Any advice? [play spider solitair] [a64]

Q: Girlfriend is now a Pentium 4 2.66 GHz, but we have its motherboard (another problem with the second IDE port does not replace) and I have to convince her to move away from Intel motherboard to what AMD.

Wondering / CPU combos you can recommend in the series AMD?

I currently conducting an 3200 + on an Epox 8KDAJ and she says she wants similar.

Please aware that everything she does is surf the net, Spider solitaire games and the occasional play or Hexic Deluxe Rocket Mania Deluxe (miniclip.com games)

So anything that has to OC or performance based.

TIA:)

Why would you do that? When you can get a real setup for $195?? (not a rebaged AXP) That's not very bright. :disgust:The 3100+ is Athlon 64 based, but it's a pointless argument as the OP is in Australia making both price quotes utterly useless.

:)

Re:I don't know what the prices are there, but the one I quoted was the non deluxe model.

I've used gigabyte boards, no major complaints. I'm not familiar with that particular board though. You might want to get some opinions on that board here, or check any reviews first.

I think I understand where you're coming from…

From a technical point of view, an XP 2500+ with a 10,000 RPM Raptor will be faster for that type of user, compared to an 4000+ with a 7200 RPM drive.

But, she doesn't want something that is considered older. I have to deal with this all the time… It's a lot along the lines of the "MHz myth"

If you want cheaper, a S754 would be better than a Sempron though. You can use a memory divider if you need to.

In that case, the ASUS K8N for about $85 is a nice board, and a S754 2800+ is about $110.

Less than $200, you got a nice board and CPU. :)

Sweet, well I'm in Australia…the CPU is approx $210, the motherboard is another story… the one you mentioned is $300 (deluxe model)

Would a Gigabyte K8VT800 be ok ? (these are only $154)

She wants to upgrade the CPU though, and no arguing with her is not an option …

The sempron sounds like a good idea..she already has 512 mb RAM (tho it's only PC2100)

Re:Unless you're going for a 3100+, Semprons are nothing more than rebadged Athlon XPs.

Sounds like a case for a Mobile Athlon XP and a Shuttle nForce2 board.

EDIT: Just re-read the post. Don't bother switching, just get any ol' Pentium 4 motherboard and use the old CPU.

Re:Athlon XP, or Sempron would be the way to go, if she gets into anything more cpu tasking later, she can get a new system, but an athlon XP/ Sempron w/ mobo package can be had dirt cheap, and they are great lil chips, and priced awesomely right now.

Sorry guys, should have mentioned…she's giving the old CPU to her father (he's using a 486!)Then just get her a Mobile XP and run it at default speeds to keep it cool and quiet. Anything over 1GHz is bordering on overkill for websurfing and office apps (unless you're running a DC app, then nothing's overkill :P ). Just make sure to give her at least 512MB of RAM.

Re:If all she does is cruise the Net and this is continuance from your other thread then there are a couple of less expensive options till she's ready for 1 Major overhaul like 1 Used or new PCI IDE card or even a USB Highspeed card and run the Data through it…both can be ad for around $20US

The ASUS A8V Deluxe is a nice stable S939 board. That's what I'm going to put in my sisters computer.

She's basically the same type of user. She surfs, plays word womp, office apps…

If thats all she does why does she need a new CPU? Its not as if Longhorn is coming out until mid 2006.

Re:Goto frys and find something in the Sempron area, Why waste money if it has the same abilities at the tasks shes doing. otherwise. I'd go 3200+ 64 and K8V… but thats just me. I still think anything in the 64 bit area is overkill.
