Q: I use SageTV and I am quite happy with it, but I wonder how the compression of Visa Ultimate Media Center. Can any current Ultimate users give their opinion about me, maybe with some screenshots? EPG data is freely available from Microsoft?
I think if Im not forced to switch to SageTV, there would be no need for anything more than get Vista Business when the time comes.
Thanks.
Best Answer: Well, you did not mention the type or capacity of the processor.
The onboard graphics are weak for anything but basic surfing or word processing.
In my humble opinion, $480 CAD is a little steep for this system unless it has an awesome state of the art processor (which I doubt).

Re:guy, that screen i took was off a digital cable service, but the cable box was only hooked up by an RCA video cable. im getting HD cable boxes on tuesday, and they have component out that should make the tv look MUCH better. but as for vista mce compared to 2005 goes, that screenshot i took would have looked like screenshit if i snagged it from 2005.

Re:Thanks guy! And guy. Just what I was looking for.
Looks real nice. However I only use my PVR app for TV and DVDs, not for music or pictures or anything else, so I'm not sure if I will use WMC instead of Sage when I install Vista Ultimate this summer. Either way I have some screens to toss around over on the Sage forums now.
Again thanks.

vista media center is incredible. it seems, at first, a lot like 2005, but as with vista alltogether what seems isnt what is. fast forward, rewind work so much better in vista mc, and the windowed mode can now stretch the full screen. it just works so much better all around, it should have been ms's main selling point, im surprised they barely speak of it. and, you dont need ultimate vista to get mc, i run OEM home premium and it has the full media center.

Re:Hit the info button and you'll see a zoom option. Option 4 is usually the best for making 4:3 programs widescreen without too much distortion. I prefer leaving things in their native format, so I have black bars when I'm watching 4:3 content. So I try to stick to the HDTV programming

Re:I just found out my school will be giving us Vista Ultimate for free in April, so I'm going to be getting Media Center no matter what. I already own Sage so it'll just be a matter of which one I want to use.
If I choose Sage, can I somehow disable the Media Center services?

Yes, EPG data is free. The interface takes a little getting used to from XP MCE's more simple layout, but once you get the hang of it, it's much better IMO. Most of the other features haven't changed much from XP, if you have any experience with it. I like the overlay menus as opposed to the little video box in the corner when you're watching video.
I don't have extensive experience with it, but I had it on a machine without tuners during RC1 and spent an hour with a HP TouchSmart box today (like an iMac with a touchscreen) which was badass. I fully expect to buy a box with CableCard tuners when available.I have no experience with Windows MCE 2005 at all so you need to compare Vista directly to Sage or Beyond for me.
Sage supports overlay transparent menus, as well, and I like the fact that my remote control and all keyboard shorcuts are completely configurable, and that it records in standard .mpg files without any DRM and that can play in any other player. It also has customizations and is frequently updated.
Would there be anything to pull me to SWITCH to Vista Media Center?

I love it. I could never use anything else. I have used both SageTV and BeyondTV btw, but their interface sucks compared to Vista's Media Center.
What is better about the interface? I like Sage's very much, Beyond's was only okay. Can you provide me with some screens? There aren't a lot online.

Re:I've been using Media Center for about 3 years now and I love it. I was a hardcore Tivo fan before that, so it's not like I haven't used anything else.
The things I like about Vista MC vs MCE 2005 are the interface, much better support of huge music and photo libraries, dead simple integration with my Xbox 360 and digital cable support (which I only got to use during beta testing, but it was sweet).
The thing just works with whatever I throw at it. I can record two analog shows, one HD show and watch a recorded analog or HD show on the extender at the same time and it doesn't blink. Or I might be recording a bunch of things while watching a recorded show on the monitor attached to the box while my GF watches something else over the extender.
I have two ATI 550 NTSC tuners and one Vbox ATSC tuner for OTA tuning.
Re:Vista Ultimate > XP MCE > BeyondTV IMHO
XP MCE was nice due to the integration with the remotes and IR blaster and free electronic program guide, but Vista's transparencies and little interface tweaks make XP MCE seem kind of clunky now that I moved back. Planning to switch back once I get a full, non-RC version and NVIDIA's 8800 drivers are a bit more mature.
