Q: Quick question
I think my hard drive is hosed. EDIT: Seagate 160GB SATA
Is some foolproof way, perhaps with a knoppix CD or something else that I can drive it hard to go back to factory settings?
Or I trash it and buy a new one?
. .
Other Details:
When I tried to boot into Windows, I got a bluescreen with error
Stop: 0xc0000218 (Registry Failure) The registry can not load the hive (file): SystemRoot System32 Config CorruptHive or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent or not writable. “
I took some useful steps on different sites, but when I step where the Recovery Console in Windows XP C: prompt, I type dir it tells me” An error occurred during directory enumeration “, which I can tell you is really happy bad.
I all my important data backed up on an external drive, so I would just love to wipe this drive and recover it as empty and used as it was when I first bought new.
I have my Windows XP CD, and have tried to repartition the drive using Windows Setup, but when I have to restart gives “can not load the hive” error above. So I suspect something beyond shielding required for the Use of this hard drive.
I able to access a CD burner and floppy drive on another PC in case I need a new program or something similar.
Re:Update:
Okay, I'm lame. Was getting an enumeration error in the recovery console because I didn't give Windows Setup the SATA drivers.
Once I did, I could get to the windows directory, fix some registry files, and reboot into safe mode.
I sort of lost my old user accounts, but it works well enough and I can recover from here.
Thanks all!

I found some recovery steps on various sites, but when I get to the step involving the Windows XP Recovery Console c:\ prompt, and I type dir it tells me "An error occurred during directory enumeration" which from what I can tell is really bad.
I thankfully have all my important data backed up to an external drive, so I'd really just like to wipe this drive and get it back to as blank and usable as it was when I first bought it new.
I have my windows XP cd, and have tried re-partitioning the drive through windows setup, but when I reboot it still gives the "cannot load the hive" error above. So I suspect something beyond partitioning is required to regain use of this hard drive.
I have access to a cd burner and floppy drive on another pc, in case I need a new program or something.
In recovery console, run chkdsk /f c:
Once that's done, and you can do a dir on the disk, see if you can boot the system normally then. If not, get back in recovery console, make backup copies of c:\windows\system32\config files sam|system|software|security (copy it to a new directory called new, let's say), then copy those same four files from c:\windows\repair to c:\windows\system32\config, and reboot.
Once that's done, you should be able to boot your system, and if you get that far, let us know so we can help further.
Re:If all you want to do is to wipe it, why don't you simply format it in the Windows setup?
Re:i would take a look at the seatools and see what that has to offer diagnostic wise
Re:Seagate 160gb SATA
I'll look through here: http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/utils.html
Thanks.
Any other tips?
Re:what kind of hard drive is it? most manufacturers will have bootable floppy images where you can run a diagnostic on the disk and will let you know if it is ok. they should also have full formatting abilities on most of the disks.
