Help. I'm stuck in the middle of building my Internet Connection Sharing (Win 2000 problem) also sharing files and printers (Solved, thanks Rusty di) [internet connnection] [network icon]

Q: Hi, I try to share my internet with direct connections to build between my Win 2000 Pro and my Win 98 SE. I have successfully set up my Win 98 box and ping correctly, but I stuck with my Win 2000 box. Let me tell you what Ive done so far. First I open the network panel to double-click the on the desktop and then open my Local Area Connection. From there, I type 192.168.0.1 in the IP address and 255.255.255.0 for the subnet. From there, I also type 192.168.0.1 in the preferred DNS. Then I can not ping the result of the DOS. What did I do wrong? Let me know as I am newbie to networks. Thanks

Darno

NB: I went to www.practicallynetworked.com but could not find information on the Win 2000. So please help me out. Thanks

Re:Whoo-Hoo! Alright! We got ourselves another budding network administrator ! :) :)

Re:thanks guy, I got it to work now.

Re:Remember, you need to be logged onto your win2k machine as the Administrator to do this. On win2k machine-right click my comp-click on manage-open up local users and groups-open up users-double click on your name (if you haven't set yourself up as a user, right click on users-add user-type in your name- UNclick user must change password-click password never expires-click create, your name should now show up on the right side). When you double click on your name-there should be 3 tabs across top, middle one is "member of"-click on it-down at bottom click add- from the next list double click on administrator-click ok. You've just made yourself an administrator.

Now, when you go to share your "C" drive, right click on C- go to sharing-click on share this folder- click the permissions tab- click add- double click your name- make sure you click the full control box- click ok- click ok. That should do it. Now everything on C drive is shared out to you over the network. Just make sure that you use your name to log onto your other machine, or it won't let you in. Fun isn't it? This is what makes win2k ( and NT) so secure, unlike win 98 you just can't walk in, you need to get past the security. :) Good luck.

Re:guy: I couldn't delete it. I changed the user back user name to Guest and group as Guests. When you said the 'middle of', where is it? Is it in the Win 2000 box of Win 98 cause I couldn't find it. Please more specific (I am newbie with network). Thanks

Darno

Re:Remove yourself from the guest account. Go back to your profile, click on middle tab-"member of", add your self to the admin group. Make sure to give yourself full control. That should take care of that.

Re:Hi, still having problem. Now I got the ICS working already and my Win 2000 box can browse the file in the Win 98 box. The problem is I can't browse the Win 2000 box files. When I open the network Neighborhood and click on my Win 2000 icon it says This user account has expired. What's wrong with that? I already add the Win 2000 user name in my Win 2000 box and set it as a guess. Don't know why it's like that. Please help me out. Thanks

Darno

Re:Sorry, didn't read your last post thoroughly, if the comps are talking, but you can't find anything out on the web, you may need to contact your isp for their dns ip's and enter them in the dns fields to be able to browse by names, ie: www.microsoft.com, instead of using ms's ip address.

Brain slipping–To set up ICS on your win2k machine, open my network neighborhood, click on your modem, go to properties, there should be a tab for sharing. Just follow the screens to enable ICS on your win2k machine. ( by default it will put your ip addy for your nic at 192.168.0.1–which you've already done.)

Re:This might help you to understand the process better.Note: You must be logged on as Administator on your win2k machine to set it up.

If you want TCP/IP set up, reinstall all your protocols making sure you have:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and print sharing
TCP/IP

If you have your win2k machine set up with 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, then your other machine should be set up with 192.168.0.2 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Make sure they're both in same workgroup ie. "guy" or whatever you want to call it. On win2k machine, go to my comp.-right click-properties-network identification, network id, and follow the wizard. On win98 machine, it's done from network properties screen-identification tab

Ping 127.0.0.1 from each machine. A successful ping means everything is set up correctly for TCP/IP

Ping the other machine's ip address, if cable is good, and nics are good, should be able to ping other machine.

On win2k machine, right click my comp-manage-open local user and groups-right click on users-add user-add your win98 user name and password-UNclick user must change password-click on password never expires-click create. When you share your files (or drives) add this user name to list of accepted users, assign permissions to that user and you're in.

Re:I have the 2 machines as the same workgroup. My win 2000 has the modem. So leave the DNS blank? what about the default gateway in the win 2000 box? LMK.. thanks Rusty…

Re:Try removing the 192.168.0.1 from the dns, then try pinging. Do you have both comps in same work group? Which machine has the modem? To share files on the win2k machine, you have to add yourself as a user, then assign yourself full control on those files.
Your win98se machine should have the ip address of 192.168.0.2, IF, you aren't using DHCP. Make sure you have TCP/IP, File and Print sharing, Client for Microsoft Networks listed in your local connection screen.

Re:how do I share the files then? What I mean is I want my Win 98 machine to be able to share the printer and files. LMK the step. Thanks

Re:I've got a VERY similar problem. Modem's in my windows 2000 machine which is connected via a crossed cable to a win 98se machine. Now I've checked the ICS box on the win 2000 machine in the connection I want to share. How the hell am I supposed to use it on the windows 98 machine now? I think (I know!) I'm just stupid….

Re:From what I understand enabling ICS is simply a matter of ticking the checkbox. Leave everything else on automatically obtain an IP address / DNS address. ICS would configure the TCP/IP settings for you automatically.

Re:I am using dial up and crossover cable. I want to connect both machines with sharing internet connection. I think that's if I have the switch or hub.. I am not sure… anyway I did this last time and I set up the IP Address but I just can't do it again cause I forgot how to do it. Thanks in advance for the help but I still need further assistance…

Re:What are you using for internet access? Once you are connected to the internet, all you should have to do is go to the icon that represents your internet connection(in "network and dial-up connections) and right click. Open the properties tab and then "shared access", click where it says "enable shared access" and it should set the IP for your LAN NIC. Set the 98 box to DHCP and you should be in business.
