Q: I recently purchased a new HD and WindowsXP installed. I have my old HD as slave in order to copy a large number of files. The problem is that I am unable to locate the Documents and Settings / Michael folder where all my files saved access points. I get a message that it is not accessible, access is denied. I suppose the problem is that I had a password for my account on my old hard drive. How can I break into the folder? 0.

Best Answer: Take the entire mess to Data Doctors. You cannot substitute the drive inside.

I don't know. I never applied a password to the folder when I was running my old drive, but my windowsXP user account had a password. I'm guessing that the the documents and settings file for my old account is restricted to only that account. If I use that PE software will I be able to copy files from the old drive to the new by guy/drop?
thx guys,

If they were encrypted (and you didn't back up the encryption key) you are sunk because your new install has a different key. If the user rights aren't correct do what [b]guy[b/] said an regain permission over the file.

Re:No need to "hack" into your drive. You only need to take ownership of the folder. Check this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421) out.

Re:If the folder is just password protected and not encrypted then there's still hope.
Go here (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) and download the software. It will allow you to build a fully functional OS running off a bootable CD (you'll need your original Windows XP or XP Home CD). With it you will be able to access your hard drive using the system account. And that will allow you to by-pass any NTFS security. It won't work if the files are encrypted though.
