Re:hehe – I checked out that link and put some comments at the bottom:

"So I have to call you to get the patch?

A direct link to the patch would save you call costs and increase customer satisfaction. You're getting nailed on forum sites for this."
Then I clicked the submit comments button, and got a page not found error. Score one for microsoft.

Re:This is a reg twek that will solve your problems. I reckon the patch MS is speaking of just does automatically what you can do manually.

"Open up REGEDIT and goto "HKCURRENTUSER\Control Panel\Desktop\"
and set the setting "HungAppTimeout" to 5000(which is default) and make "WaitToKillAppTimeout" 4000(20000 is default) Also, go to "HKLOCALMACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Wa itToKillServiceTimeout" and make that 4000 too. "

I've done this myself. It works.

Re:I'll try this tonite,

but my motherboard is ACPI, and I install the XP with ACPI enable,

won't APM force me to reinstall?

Re:You may try this Go to my computer/properties/hardware/device manager—-view/show hidden devices/ NT APM/ legacy support, and enable it. Will fix the "shut down computer" hangup.

Re:<< Next thing they'll ask me to FAX instead of email >>

I bought a product from a store the other day where the only way to contact them for any assistance whas via snail mail….

I didn't realize companies like that existed anymore….

Re:Oh my god, I have to use a phone and call

Whatever happen to the Forward Looking Tech company and the
premise of using the Web to cut down the support cost?

Next thing they'll ask me to FAX instead of email

For a company that practically control the world, C'mon guys, you can do better

Re:Unfortunately, you have to call MS to get the fix (how stupid is that?). But, I got this from a Lockergnome newsletter:

For those people having problems shutting down XP, try going to the Command Prompt and type: "shutdown -s -t 5" (sans quotes). If this works better than the traditional shutdown method, then you can put this into a batch file and make it an icon on your desktop.

(This, and more, can be found at my website…)
