Q: I have a Lite-On 52×24x52 CD-RW drive that I bought . hmm . one year and half or two years ago. i didnt have any problems with it until 2 or 3 weeks ago. Now, at least half of the disks i dont try to work to burn. Nero breaks at somewhere between 6-8% in the burning process, and at that point the station begins a process of stopping the spin, then spin up, stop, spin, etc. If everything is ready, nero gives me an error either say “Power Calibration Error” or “Write Error” 0.
I use TDK 48x CD and ive tried writing at 48x and 40x . dropping the speed down didnt make any difference. I have the firmware upgrade to the latest version for my drive from Lite-Ons website, and Ive updated my copy of Nero (5.5.10.54). I use Nero 5 because that is shipped with the drive.
anyone have some suggestions on what to do? I will really be upset if the drive is dying, because Ive only used a max of 60 bought CDs because I burn it. the rest of my PC specs are linked to in my sig if you need em. Thanks for any help.
Re:I just had the exact same thing happen to me, exact same symptoms. This makes 3 out of my 3 lite-on drives that have died within a year… looks like I'm going to try a different brand now, thats just too many dead drives for me to remain happy with them

In my case, I found out that my PSU(Enermax) was blowing hot air on the drives and everytime I got done with a couple of succesive burns, The disks were getting really hot. I'm pretty sure that it was the overheating of the drive that cut it's life short. I fixed the heat problem by going with a different PSU and all seems fine so far(knock on wood).
Actualy if its posible It would probably be a good idea to find a psu or anouther method that can draw the heat away from the drive itself. I have seen a new case that had a fan on the psu taking the hot air from the top of the case like that before.Thanx for the tip, But after replacing my Enermax PSU with a Fortron that has the 120mm fan on the bottom of it, Heat has been zero of a problem. Problem with the Enermax was that the bottom fan was blowing hot air right out of the top back vents right onto my drives.

Re:power calibration error = bad news
Time buy a new CDRW
Re:bleh…i had a bad feeling that this is what everyone would say. now i just dont know if i want to buy another lite-on (they're nice and inexpensive), or if i should try a different brand…
Re:Unfortunately I will have to concur with the rest of the folks here..Sounds like the drive is going south. I have had this happen to 2 Lite-On drives now. One being a 48×24x48 and the other being a 52×24x52. Re:Drive is most likely on its last leg. I had one go and it did the same thing. These drives have a finite life and some are shorter than others.
Re:Whenever you get the power calibration error, it's usually not good. That's the error I've gotten on all my drives when they were on their way out (and none of them work anymore)

Re:Maybe windows is starting to get unstable? Might be something like IDE drivers that could be messing things up too, they could be corrupt. It sounds bad to me though, the drive may be on it's way out
