Help! Networks without a router and hub [cross over cable] [network connections]

Q: Hi,

So I installed a second network card in my desktop so I can now have a is connected to an Internet connection sharing with my laptop. Everything is in place and properly installed, I got into , select the network connection, properties, advanced and enabled ICS. At the moment it is telling me that I should 192.168.000.1 ip at that point I changed, so heres the problem. My computer is already on a network in my apartment but the one computer that has the cable modem is the IP address 192.168.000.1., Is possbiel to have an ICS where you are already running off to another host?

Thanks.

Re:Ok, use ICS Wizard and go from there. Use a crossover cable to go from PC to PC. if you use a hub, use a regular cable.

Re:damn, i got lost in midterm season, i didn't even botherwith this connection in my room until now. Ok, so i have a router in my apartment. I just want my laptop that is on my desk to be able to have access to the internet as well. I have 2 NIC card in my desktop, and I am usinga from laptop to desktop. I have windows xp home edition on both of them, maybe i would just go for a damn hub, haha, thanks for the replies

Re:Pardon my post i was wrong….i thought you were using a hub. Sorry if about the confusion.

Re:If you are going directly from PC to PC with no hub or switch in the middle you WILL need a crossover cable.

What OS are you using? Ecactly how is your network set up?

Are you connected to a broadband connection? ok, i'm going to assume that you have a broadband connection on one NIC and are using the second for ICS. Is the cable/dsl modem going directly into that NIC? or do you have a router somewhere in the building?

If you have only 1 line going into your room, you could buy a cheap hub for like $20 – $30 and use that for both of the PC's. Then you would not need to use ICS. Also you would not need to worry about keeping the main PC on to be able to use the other one.

If this does not help you, try to give a little more info and we can figure it out! :)

Re:If you are connecting NIC to NIC without a hub or switch, you will probably need a .

The 192.168.0.1 ip address (192.168.000.1 is not valid ;) ) is necessary on the INSIDE of the network, not the external link.

Re:It does not require a crossover cable…regular cat5 will do.

Re:i odn't know if it requires a crossover cable or not, but most of what I've read said to use a crossover cable

Re:Does ICS require a crossover cable? I thought just a regular CAT5 cable was all that was needed for ICS. Of course, I have never actually used ICS, but that was my impression. I may be wrong so it would certainly pay to see if someone else can be more helpful.
