Q: Hi,
Recently Windows 2000 automatically restart at times and freezes much Counter-Strike. I went into my BIOS and found my CPU temp is 80degrees Celsius. This seems a little hot for me and I think the source of my problem. The fan / heatsink I use is that I have with my mwave motherboard / CPU combo that some cheap u0026quot; u0026quot; Power Cooler says on the box. So I feel that it is a fan. Any recommendations on a cheap, good fan?

Re:Thermistor in the middle of the socket. Those temperatures are thermistor temperatures and are NOT compensated! They are hot, but the heatsink (hedgehog) is hot too! I let it hit 83°C while in BIOS (dropped fan voltage until it stopped) and touched the bottom of the heatsink and it felt like touching my wife's curling iron! OUCH!

Re:High temps? My AXIA 1.2 GHz running at 1.4 GHz hits 75°C running SETI. I increased the voltage to the fan motor to 12V and the temp dropped to 66°C.
This is a chip that will POST at 1.6 GHz no problem but lock up when reading the SCSI BIOS. The core is around 59°C when this happens.
Athlons at 1.1 GHz and higher are rated to run reliably up to 95°C. Of course you cannot expect an overclocked chip to run at that high of a temperature! 80°C sounds like you definitely have a cooling problem given the speed your chip is running at. Check the voltage too! I remember having a Celeron that was running hot at default speed and couldn't figure out why until I saw it was running at 2.8 volts!

Re:Your case temp is "OK". It could be a little lower though. Assuming the temp in the room is around 75F, your case temp should be within about 10 degrees F of room temp. Sounds like you need a new HSF, some Arctic Silver and maybe some case mods. Something as simple as removing the perforated metal grill (built into the case chassis) and replacing with a wire grill can make a big diff. I performed this proceedure on my case (Antech KS282 midtower) and now my case temp is never more than 1-2C more than room temp. Average is about 23C. Not bad at all.
Your CPU…I'm surprised it's still breathing! :Q :Q:Q:Q:Q Your temps are way off the scale of "acceptable". I have a lapped FOP32-1 and Arctic Silver on my 1Gig running at 1103, and my temps never get above 52C ever. Average after much gaming, benchmarking is 46-47C.
You're on the right track by getting a new HSF and some Arctic Silver. BTW, the AS DOES make a big diff. It's worth the $$.

Re:MAKE SURE THAT THE OFF-CENTER CLIP RESTS OVER THE CORE! I had a similar problem with my Duron 600@1000 that I ran at 80C for several hours. After trying some tips from these fellas, I found out that was the problem. Once I switched the clip, I went down to 45C.

Re:Get an Antec SX830 case, stock it with 4 80mm fans, and drop an Alpha or Globalwin heatsink on that cpu. THEN get a Delta 38cfm 60mm fan and let 'er rip.
With this setup my 1.2GHz (9×133) runs at 42°C idle and 45°C under load.
BTW, Athlons are rated "safe" up to 85°C I believe.

Hey I bought the same motherboard + CPU + fan combo. and my system was running at about 65-70C. And i know thats to hot, but i did not put thermal paste on it. Did u forget to put it on your cpu as well?
I know the thermal paste will at least get the temp down to 55-60C which should be alright. not good but alrigh for the small HSF they supply.
BTW have you ever lived in Dubai,UAE?
Re:It shouldn't be that hot even with a bad HSF, is it properly seated, does it make enough contact, what kind of Thermal paste did you use, do all fan's run properly?
Remove the HSF and check it out…
The PowerCooler should definently be enough to cool a 1Ghz T-bird below 60 degrees C, although i do not recommend them for overclockers, they should be fine with non overclocked CPU's…

Re:I had a heating problem to ( or thought I did) it was just the software that came with my board was reporting the temps wrong all the way upto 104C. I now have my CPU OCed at 1.12GHZ and its running at 31C right now, with just IE open. Try getting VIA Hardware Monitor. BTW i'm useing a Super-Orb.

Re:My Duron runs at 46, and if she hits 55+ I would panic completely. 80 should be doing harm to your CPU. After getting good advice, I got a HSF that I lapped and applied Silverpaste on. It is stable and affordable. Don't kill that poor CPU!!!

Re:80 is definitely much higher than you want, seems like most people shoot for around 50c for the 1ghz-1.2ghz with a decent HS+fan, and thermal compound.

to me that doesnt sound right at all… can a processor actually get that hot and still run? I mean damn….lol
Re:I would recommend getting a nice HSF with you T-bird 1GHz.
These chips get hot, and you dont want to be caught with a dead CPU trying to save a couple bucks on a HSF.
There are a lot of good HSF for the T-bird.

Oh yah, if you dont have thermal material installed on your current HSF, you might want to try it. It will bring your temps down.
