Q: I just built my system – K8NE Deluxe with Antec Sonata case, however, the front USB ports do not work. I used the plug at the front of the case comes to the USB header 56 and the front of the USB ports will not work if I plug into the USB 78 to the rear and front panel ports does not work header ? Suggestions? I went to the ASUS site and download drivers / utilities for whatever reason my Asus CD that came with the MB could not be read in my hard disk, CD Every Other works naturally! Is there a USB 2.0 driver that I need to be installed on the MB? I have WinXP Pro SP2 installed on the box. Any help would be appreciated. Other than that this thing screams

Re:The jumper is for USB 5VSB aware devices and requires the PSU to support it.
Setting it to +5VSB will cause the system not to boot if the PSU does not support it.
Essentially is the Serial equivalent to Wake-On-Lan.
Re:Ok – I've gotten my hard drive woes sorted out and am ready to hit the front end USB problem again. I've aligned my header connections according to the intel standard (v4 – still trying to get Chieftec to send me v3 to see if it's any different) and Chieftec's own connection diagrams. Still the same problem – ports will only work as USB 1.1. There is a jumper on the mb right next to the USB header that apparantly changes the voltage from +5 v to +5 smv. Not that changing this setting helped at all, but what is the difference?
Any other suggestions besides maybe replace the case-side USB/1394 connector unit?
Re:Great, looks like it's going to be a while – my primary hard drive crapped out on me today. My SCSI controller sees it , then it doesn't and it's making some seriously abnormal sounds……dammit. That's timing for you. Thanks LilithTecH, I appreciate your time but this problem is even suckier than my first. I may have to start looking for a new hard drive now.:|:|

Either way, I think I know where you're going with this. I see that there are links to their USB/1394 connection instructions for two different versions (good to know). I can see v4 but the I can't see v3 – there's something wrong with the PDF file the link is going to. Can you see it? I think mine's v4 though because the pin assigments look the same:

Do you happen to know what the difference between versions is though? I got my case off of eBay a while back and never knew what the brand was – not the "case" now 
I'll play around with it and let you know how it works out.

To make sure they are connected correctly, the order of the colored wires should be:
Red(5V) – White(D-) – Green(D+) – Black(Gnd)
Not all aftermarket USB Cable assemblies are created equal.
Re:I saw your fix for the USB issue guy was having – I have been looking for a solution for my own front port USB problem. I have an A7N8X-E Deluxe board – not sure what kind of case it is but I would guess Antec or Lian Li. Anyway, the USB cabling had all the separate pin outs – I finally got them hooked up right just as LiLith TecH said later in the thread:

The problem I have is that the front USB ports would only pick up my USB 2.0 fujifilm jump drive when the bios was set to 1.1. If I set it to 1.1/2.0, I get an "unknown device" in my device manager under USB controllers. I even went as far as replacing the internal header cable thinking that it might have been the quality of the wiring/shielding. These were not the single pin out type so it was easier to hook up but in the end I still got the same result. All the other USB ports in the back pick up the jump drive just fine as a 2.0 device. I've also updated my bios, searched for drivers and so far nothing has fixed the problem. Never have I lost the use of all my USB ports – just can't run 2.0 on the fronts. I'm running XP Pro sp2. Any ideas?

Re:Motherboard manfacturers all approach USB headers differently, but with the same results.
With your motherboard\case combo, the wiring should be as follows:
Pins (bottom row)
1 – +5V
3 – D-
5 – D+
7 – GND
Pins (upper row)
2 – +5V
4 – D-
6 – D+
8 – GND
10 – NC

Re:Had the same problem more than once! It seems like the USB plugs of many, if not most, cases are wired WRONG. If you look at the plug going from the case to your MB, assuming it is a modular one, I think you will find that PIN 10 has a wire to it. Probably a BLACK wire. If you clip this wire, or if you have individual pin plugs to the USB header, remove the one to PIN 10 and your problem will be solved. It is a mystery how so many cases are wired like this! That wire is usually a ground and is not only not needed but will disable that USB port and probably any other MB USB ports.
Pin 10 is usually labeled in the USB specs as "over current". It was either never implimented or not supported by MB makers.
