help with setting up a wireless network [wirless router] [card model]

Q: We just bought two robotic wirless adapter with PCI card, model 2415
and a Linksys router with 4 port wirless, and suggestion, there will be many conflicts

Best Answer: When you use internet, your computer is not directly connected to the Internet. Instead your computer is one of local network computers each of which is represented by internal IP address. When you open your browser, your request for a web page is sent to your router (Gateway for the INTERNET) and your internal IP address is translated into an external IP address which the Internet can understand. Then your router (Gateway) is smart enough to know where to forward your request.
When the server responded to your request with a web page, it also goes through your router(gateway) and your external ip address is translated back to your internal ip address and then your computer receives the page.
The easiest way to setup wireless network with gateway for your router is to follow instructions on the manual for your router. Otherwise network setup could be complicated and you might need some help from computer geeks.

Re:I'm using a DLink DI-713P router and US Robotics card. The range is not terrific, but it's not terrible. My room is on the opposite side of the house, and on another floor, from the router, and I get acceptable communication there. If I put it on a shelf by the door, I get pretty much constant 11mbits/s connection. If I put it on the far side of my room, it hangs around 5.5 and drops to 2 or 1 and occasionally spikes to 11. I've thought about going with an external antenna for the DI-713P but I'm still evaluating my options.

Be sure that you set the USR card to "Infrastructure" mode. I wish I'd remembered that, would have saved me a few hours.

Re:Linksys cards have notoriously poor range. Perhaps their newer cards are improved. Orinco/Agere are good cards. Cisco 100 mW 350 offer the best range, feature set, througput etc etc.., but at a very high cost.

Re:haven't played much with the USR…but it should be fine…

I know that the cards with the best range are:

Orinoco or Linksys (WPC11v.3)

i can't honestly tell you about the USR…but I do work with a lot of wireless so…as long as it's 802.11b…it WILL talk…

Re:no conflict…since both devices are 802.11b…they will communicate…

make sure on the US Robotics, the configuration is set to match that of the Linksys….which is:

SSID (or ESSID): linksys (this is case sensitive)
mode: infrastructure

the card should pick up the default channel as : 6
