Q: Hi, just
I my first computer together and I was wondering if its a good idea to bring Windows 2000 Professional. I do not know much about the OS. Is it only for business, or can I use at home?
Thanks!
Best Answer: Haha, is that a rhetorical question?
Most people use Windows on the MacBook for something really specialized that might not have a counterpart on the Mac like:
1) ERP apps (like SAP in a business)
2) AutoCAD (there are Mac alternatives but no Mac AutoCad)
3) Programming embedded devices
4) An old game from Windows that you really like…
Re:You didn't mention your intended use for this system, and that would be the biggest deciding factor in the decision. XP is a little easier to handle with games, whereas 2000 takes the attitude that it is a business OS and thus gaming support tends to me more limited.
Re:You can run either 2k or XP, whichever you can get cheaper. Do not run 9x/ME.
Re:Never used Win XP, but am comfortable with Windows 2000 and highly recommend it. It's had 3 service packs and is stable and mature. It will run most things that Win 9.X will run and often better and faster. It is a TON more stable than any of those and probably less trouble than XP at this point and it doesn't have nearly as much of the paranoid MS security which appears to be in the same league as chastity belts. Having used Win95 and WinNT for years, when I heard that an NT based OS (Win2000) had the multimedia support of Win98 and other software support and that it was affordable and my hardware would run it, well the decision was made and I'm never going back. Don't even consider WinME.
Re:No offence, but I actually found XP more confusing that Win2k (which I'm using, too, and which has work very well indeed for me), and it belongs to the NT side of OS's as well My reply didn't come out too well. Personally I find WinXP more confusing as well, and yes, it is an NT line OS.
If you are an OS newbie, WinXP is probably more desirable than Win2K. If you are a veteran, you would probably want Win2K.

But whatever you do, you want to stay away from WIN 98/SE/ME if you don't have to work with old DOS software. If you're into gaming, there a thread floating around here about 'Win2k (or WinXP?) good for gaming'. You might want to check that, too.
Re:You can use it at home. It's a very nice OS, and it's what I use, but if you are uncomfortable with the NT line of OSes, you may want to check out Windows XP instead, since many things are simplified.
