Q: I have the cable modem to the hub . said cable modem and a PC there.
But when I connect the computers with standard RJ45 cables for computers or other access to the Internet! The green light on hub does not either!
Solutions?
Best Answer: If you bought a combo wifi router DSL modem then you need to call Verizon and tell them you have your own model. Then they will ask you for your MAC address. It should be on the back or bottom of your modem/router. Once you give them the MAC Address they will use that to send your modem a signal and authorize the modem to access their network.

Re:I ahve my cable modem connected with the supplied CAT5 cable to the last hub port with the uplink button pushed in. I could not get it to work without its supplied cable. I believe its a crossover. Then 2 pcs connected to ports 1+2. This setup renders port 3 inactive. Dont know why, must be the internals of the Netgear hub. Now with 2 IP addresses all works great here. I guess a larger hub will allow more PCs with more IPs of course. So any more added here will be via proxy ICS.

Re:If you have multiple IPs from your ISP then connect the cable modem to the uplink on the hub OR use a Xover to a regular port. Do not use a Xover cable to the uplink.

Re:I have Road Runner Cable and asked for two Dynamic IP's so my son and I could play games online at the same time (same site). I have a Toshiba cable modem and five computers hooked up to the net using various hubs. Check out my Network (http://home.hot.rr.com/sgallery/network.htm)

Re:When you plug a modem (any kind…dial-up or broadband) into a hub, it doesn't disperse the bandwidth equally among all the ports like I foolishly thought when I went ahead and purchased one. In order for a computer to connect to the internet with cable, you need to assign it the IP address your ISP assigned to you in the appropriate area. Computers cannot have the same IP address, or there is a conflict. So the only way I know of to share a single internet account is to use a proxy (a simple to use, small proxy program can be found atAnalog X (http://www.analogx.com). This allows the computer that is directly connected to the internet to work as your homes server, and other computers on the network connect to it like the connected computer does over the internet. The only down side to this program is the socks5 doesn't work (basically, ICQ will not connect) otherwise you can surf the web and download etc from any other computer in the house. There are some programs you actually pay for (one that I own) that are much nicer and allow all features, even provide firewalls and other such securities. Good luck connecting your computers, I hope this helped some. If I wasn't clear enough, ask again or e-mail me. I'll try harder, but it's late and my eyes are having trouble focusing.

Re:I remember having that problem when I first tried cable. I think if you use a crossed cable to the hub it ends up working.
Sorry I don't remember anymore if I actually did that or someone told me that after I got rid of cable.

Re:yeah.. he is right. you need a router (no switch or hub)… all a hub does is send all the iinput and output of 1 port to all the other ports. a switch sends only the info that is needed to each port (bad wording.. but i don't really know how to explain it to good in a few words)..
a router is actually a computer (has cpu and all inside) that assigns each computer an ip and gives service to each …. sorry it is like 12, i cannot explain it well… but you need a router.. or a linux box ![]()

Re:I have AT&T @home cable and I just setup mine to share access to both my computers last night. I bought a Linksys 4port Router (10/100 switch, gateway) and it works great. I dont think it will work with a normal hub u might have to get a real router to split the connection.
