How a network of 98 and NT Workstation machine? [sharing an internet connection] [win98 machines]

Q: I have a machine running Win 98SE and one running NT Workstation. I want them along the network, so I can share files. Im not really worried about so far. Only the file. I have no problems getting two to see each other, but I just can not get 98 and NT Workstation talking. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. This is really bugging me for the last few days. I know someone must have done in the past .

Thanks,
C

Re:Yes, but NT uses domains and 9x uses workgroups. And from what I understand that are not the same thing. That's why I was wondering how to set a workgroup on an NT box. If I could do that and just set it to the same workgroup as the 9x machine I think I'd be all set, but I don't know how (or if) you can specify a workgroup on an NT machine.

Re:I don?t have the NT box in front of me at the moment, but you can try right click My Computer icon on the desktop, then select Properties, then Identification then change the Workgroup name to the same name as the Win98 machine. Or change the Win98 to the same Workgroup as the NT machine.

Re:lowtech, how do I set the workgroup for the NT machine? I can't find anything for that.

Thanks,

Re:<< I don?t understand how people wearing the elitist badge don?t know that Files System isn?t a consideration over a network.

What you have to do is to give the Win98 machine permission to read files on your NT box if they are not in a group. But it is best to have both of them in the same work group and create the share and permission for the Machine or User to have access to the NT box. And, turn on the Print & Files Sharing on the Windows98. >>

You are 100 % correct sir,my experience with networking is limited and in my haste to help I think I confused dual boot considerations with networking. I also made the mistake of ASSuming he had his groups,share/permissions in place, thanks for
stepping up and providing correct info :)

Re:1. Make sure both machine is in the same Workgroup.

2. Create a user on the NT machine that is the same as the Win98 user.

3. Give permission in the NT box to let the Win98 box/User use the share.

4. Log into the Win98 box as the user that you have created on NT box.

5. Browse the network our use UNC to get to the NT box from the Win98 box.

It shouldn't take long for you to browse the network, but for the moment you could map the drives in the Win98 machine to the NT4 box.
Also make sure you share the drives or files in the Win98 to the user that access from the NT4 box.

Re:Cool, thanks. I am now able to share files between the two machines. I still have 2 questions though:

1. Whenever I browse the network from the NT machine, it takes a long time to browse through every screen to get to the 98 machine and its shared folder and its files. Like maybe 2 minutes between screens. Once I get to the files, I am able to transfer them quickly between the machines. This is only a problem when using the NT machine to look at the 98 machine. Looking at the NT machine from the 98 machine goes very quickly. Any ideas on this one? I'm stumped….

2. When I log into the 98 machine I have to use a username/pass from the NT machine. But when I click ok, it tries to validate against a domain server which doesn't exist (since I'm connecting to NT workstation). It takes a few minutes to do this before coming back with the error maesage that no domain server could be found. I am still able to see everything on the NT machine after getting in 98. I just want to try and eliminate this error message or the wait it takes to bring it up. Any ideas here?

Thanks,
C

Re:I'm assuming you formated the Win98 rig with fat 32,when you formated the hard drive in the NT machine did you use NTFS ?
that could be why you can't get the machines to see each other. You'd want to format each rig with Fat16.
