Q: Im trying a friends computer running Windows 98 to resolve. Somehow she managed to get so that Windows will start, but all you get is not a desktop cursor and shell. You can not right-click or something. You can use the CTRL-ALT-DEL to do, but that only brings the end program box, as opposed to XP Task Manager. Someone told me that she thought there was a way to call the “run” box (as the Start menu) from a key, but could not remember. Actually, all I want to do is be able to run Explorer, so I can have a USB drive to store data from a number of hook and then reinstalling the OS. Any thoughts?

youll need to run SysTray.exe (from run) to get your desktop back, then fix it.

Re:You'll have to boot to a command prompt to do this fix listed below. The command prompt option is in the Safe Mode menu, or just boot with a Windows 98 bootdisk (easily found online at www.bootdisk.com, for example).
Do a complete virus scan first with a write-protected floppy to make sure none of your work is in vain. Then, follow the instructions in the link below.

Re:Thanks…I guess the whole thing is screwed because CTRL-ESC won't even bring up the start menu. Basically the only thing it will respond to is CTRL-ALT-DEL. And what's weird is it does the same thing even in safe mode-just a blank desktop.

Re:Try ctrl+esc then up & down key to scroll, and enter key to select.
Or try F8 key during boot & select safemode.
