Question: Hello everyone. I have a question about my Win98 machine. S me allowing a guest to using my computer, I would not believe the person is able to delete files at will or for any changes in my system to do. Is there a decent program that will enable me to log him / her as u0026quot; u0026quot, guests and limiting their access so they can only use certain applications? Is there a way to do this within the win98 self? I know, switch to Win2K (or Linux) for more security, but this problem u0026quot; u0026quot, is temporary in nature, so I would prefer not to switch.
Thanks in advance. I appreciate it.

I found a program called Boot Locker Pro 3.0 Network Pack that will restrict user access, but Im not sure if it will prevent someone from deleting files. Has anyone used this program? Are there any other recommendations?
Re:<<whats so funny?>>
Just hit cancel and you'll find out!
Only reasonable way to restict acces is Win2k really.
I tried it, and it runs all my games.
(Well at least the recent one's I still play – Can't get Civilisation II to run though)
If you're only playing recent games and use "productivity" software you should consider it.
At least a program crash doesn't mean a system crash anymore. You get the desired acces restrictions. Get yourself a restricted account and you can't ruin you're system by accident.
(Productivity excludes MS office of course, too many crashes to be productive

Re:Well, at work we use Fortress on our 98 workstations… It works out pretty well, locks up about as tight as NT. Couple of problems however. It's expensive software, and we often times face compatibility issues which take time and a whole lot of patches to fix.
I have to agree that 2000 is clearly the way to go
Re:<< Windows passwords haha >>
whats so funny?
Re:I have to agree windows 98 was not designed for security.
Windows passwords haha
Re:If you really, truly need this functionality, you should use NT or Windows 2000.
Win98 simply was not designed with this functionality. Any "solution" you find is going to be an ugly hack.
The fact of the matter is that Win98 was just not designed for such a use.
Re:Read through this ZDNet article to find out if Microsofts System Policy Editor meets your needs.
System Policy Editor: A Free Windows Lock and Key (http://www.pcworld.com/hereshow/article.asp?aid=7521&pg=7)
Don't download it from the link in the article though, it's on your Win98 CD-Rom under Tools>Reskit>Netadmin>poledit
Even without the Policy Editor, you can hide individual files, or entire directories by checking "Hidden" under "Properties", as long as Windows Explorer is set to "Do not show hidden files" in the Tools>Folder Options>View dialog box.
Re:highlight your whole hardrive and go into properties, mark everything as read only? or will that not work?
