How do I connect two computers (not to the net)? [cross over cable] [old computer]

Q: I just bought new computer and I want to copy all my files from my . Calculates both a NIC and I have a crossover cable, but Im not sure how to configure them so they can join. Both are Windows Me.

Best Answer: Using a good IP address and subnet for your wired connection will limit what your PC's will look for over the wire. Additionally if you have a gateway set on the wired connection, the PC will expect this to know where Google etc is.
I am assuming the DHCP to your wireless is a 192.168.x.0) address with a subnet of 255.255.255.0
Whatever number x is, do not use this on your wired connection and do not set a gateway.
This will stop your systems using the wired connection to access the Internet

Re:Thanks, I will make sure they have the same workgroup name. I think that was the problem.

Re:Four, posting even when it says it is not. I love computer problems, it is why we have jobs!
:o

Re:Three, I love errors.

Re:I would have to go with guy on this one, adding:

Make sure the computer names are different and the workgroup is the same. Then after rebooting yet again, you should be able to browse through network neighborhood to the other computer.

You should also have indicator lights on your NICs that are glowing happily.

Re:You must be kidding, or did someone else build the computer for you?

Re:I just tried what you said guy and nothing seems to be happening. Do I need to Map the drives or something like that??
Thanks

Re:Opening up both systems, removing the drive, changing the jumpers, installing it in the other system, copying the files, removing the drive, changing the jumpers back and re-installing it in the first system is simpler then clicking a few icons?

Re:If you only want copy files, the simpliest way without setting up a network is to take the HDD from the and install it on the new one as a slave. Put it back after you're done.

Re:have any other problems, give me a msg ;)

Re:Open up network. You can do this either by right-clicking the desktop icon, and selecting "Properties", or by going in to Control Panel to open it up. Once it is open, you will see a list of the adapters and protocols that are installed.

Click "Add", then select "Protocol", and click "Add" again. Then, from the left box, highlight Microsoft, and from the right box, highlight NetBEUI. then click OK.

At this point, it will want your Windows CD. After it installs the files, you'll need to reboot.

After the reboot, go back in to networking, setup file and print sharing, reboot, then go in to My Computer, right click the hard drive icon, select properties and setup the share.
