How do I know if my CPU is overheating [pc stats] [dp5]

Q: 1. When im playign Quake3 for a while, or just a game blocks. locks the screen no sound no movement.

Is that i dont know why it would overheat check my computer stats on the gear link below

The GS I Got It:

when first build i accidenly scarted some thermal pad stuff i thoihht It was a peel off . First time builder error heh! , but I doubt it bc thats how it should melt in the die.

Best Answer: You most likely have to get a new heatsink, and it does not really matter which one. Just look up you motherboard and print off its specs. Bring the sheet in a computer store and they will get you the right one. However if this did not happen before you upgraded your card it means that your gpu is actually heating up the case which is actually causing the over heating. I recomend you get a expansion bay fan. They are fans that go into an expansion bay right beside your card. They can actually cut the overall case temp by 30% because they take out the warm air that the gpu is shooting out. You might also need to get a better drivebay fan. I think your best bet is to get an expansion bay fan and maybe a new drivebay fan. If your cpu ran fine before then its just the card thats increasing the temp.

Re:I had a problem with an XP1700 Palomino (at 1.750 volts like your's) and a GF4 Ti4200 video card on my old KT266A chipset mobo. Problem was, the CPU and the video card are so power hungry, they fight for juice… seems like the CPU lost most of the time in my system cause it would randomly reboot when playing 3D intense games. I watch MBM as I started a 3D game, and CPU voltage dropped to 1.69 when the video card fired up in 3D. So in the BIOS I set the voltage to +0.50 volts and that cured the problem… voltage only dropped to 1.740, and got as high as 1.780… temps didn't change at all… but the stability problems were cured.

Re:To give us a better idea of what may be going, post your full specs: cpu, mobo, ram, psu, OS.

I still think that idling at 50C is pretty warm. Also, if you can't get Arctic Silver, you can always use the thermal paste they have at Radio Shack in a pinch.

Re:im using onbaord iva ac97.. but when i had my tirtle beach card in i crashes also. The lsat video card dint work w/ this mboso i got this onehinking it was the vid card and its not.

Re:I doubt that your problem is your CPU overheating. I am running at 51C right now and have no stability problems to speak of nor do I get any lock ups. The only time my system locks up is when I use the onboard sound and that is because the onboard sound and XP don't get along. I would look at drivers being more the issue.

Re:Why don't you use a CPU specific benchmark, like Prime 95, to see if it's the CPU causing the problems?

Re:im gonna make my cpurun @ 900mhz turn down fsb intill i can e the rigt stuff.

Re:Use MB monitor or something and check your temperatures run a cpu extensive program and watch the temp monitor.

Re:temps
cpu 50c
system 36c

says my volts are

core 0-1.78v
core 1- 0.03v
+3.3-3.33.v
+5.00-4.84v
+12.00-12.22
-12.00 -12.27v
-5.00- -5.09v

Re:ahh no stores sell it around here compusa/radio shack no use and ordering onlien for something so small and simple heh!
just went into bios temps where

50c cpu
36c system
bout 46 boot up C

Well i have jsut got this card. 2day 28th … My cpu is also @50 idle and playing goes to bout 54i think in ever check after that when it crash i cant check?

That's to high, just get some thermal paste and get rid of the pad.

Re:How do i know if my cpu is overheating

Well bursting into flames is a pretty good indication of overheating.

Get some Arctic Silver III and just reseat the heatsink, if that dose not work, make sure you power supply is decent. Could be a driver issue as well though, in which case you should update them all.

The video card hs is not hot at all.

The cpu is always hot always runs #50c idle i tohught that was good ;(

Re:It looks like there isn't a good enough interface between your cpu and the heatsink, which is causing your cpu to overheat and thus the lockups. To double check, note your mobotherboard model and download MotherBoard monitor 5 it is a very useful program in determining how hot your cpu is getting. The site has a little grid that will direct you on configuring the prog's sensors to your motherboard.

If your cpu temps reach 50C or more, I'd say that its definetly a heat issue. Your best bet would be to get some goof off and completely remove the thermal pad then apply something like Arctic Silver to interface between the cpu and HS.

Re:So you have some sort of thermal pad or thermal greese on your current heatsink, right? Try installing Motherboard Monitor and check the temps… I think the cause of your game crashes is probably instablity due to driver corruption, some sort of unstable OC, or a video card issue.
