How do I secure a wireless network? [ethernet cables] [desktop pcs]

Q: I have a Linksys b / g wireless router. Ive set up with two connected via Ethernet cable, and wireless disabled.

My GF wants to use her work laptop now online. I turned on the radio, and everything works. However, I feel that it is not safe. What settings should I watch to keep outsiders out?

Re:Disabling the SSID is a common practice in the enterprise

Just because "everyone is doing it" doesn't mean it is a worthwhile security practice.

Re:I wouldn't do just one to "secure" my network, but a combination of those. Disabling the SSID is a common practice in the enterprise. Mac filitering is just another level to add. I would use Mac filtering WITH no SSID WITH Encryption WITH authentication if possible. If not possible, use as much as is possible.

Re:Disabling SSID broadcast is usless and only leaves you with a network that doesn't conform to spec. MAC filtering also has dubious benefit, since it is relatively simple to spoof a MAC.

The best way to secure a wireless network is to use WEP or WPA and change the keys often, or encapsulate wireless traffic in a VPN.

you only need the mac address filtering to see the laptops mac, doesn't effect the wired ports. Go into the routers web menu and you should see some security options. Use the best encryption supported (WPA>Wep128>Wep40)

I saw the WEP stuff when I was looking at it last night. Does the laptop need a key or anything installed?

Re:also disable ssid broadcast, if that is an option.

mac address filtering, wireless encryption, latest firmware on the router and strong password is a good start.

So I can set the router to only allow traffic from my three PCs MAC addresses? How do I go about the encryption and passwords… do I need to install anything on the machines?
