Q: Hi,
Im trying to convince my parents buy me an iPod for my 18th in October (under the guise that they d a great present, and then get it laser engraved as well), and wondered, In the case of Firewire on my Audigy (1) Compatible / doesnt work isnt the Firewire on the iPod, ive how long it would take to using a 15GB USB1.0 connection.
Cos filling heard some people having problems with iPods and the FireWire port on the Audigy (1), and that damage occurs (cannot see how, but .). I `d prefer not to have a FireWire or USB2 card to buy if I can avoid it.

SB1394 4pin (same as standard 4 pin, but only provides 2W of power, used on all Audigy variations).
Eh? 4pin is unpowered; the iPod manual says that it can only draw power off 6pin connectors. As for SB1394 itself, the internal conector is 4 pin, but the external connector(also called SB1394) is a full-featured 6pin connector.

Re:Real world USB 1.1 transfers are around 750KB/s which would be about 5.5-6 hours for a 15GB transfer. Not a big deal if you let it run over night.
So how does that compare to USB 2 ? Lets say 5GB of music (nice round number that can be multiplied to any mp3 player size 5/10/15/20).
USB 2.0 would transfers would range from about 10-20MB/s.

Are you asking how usb 1.0 compares to 2.0? If so well…usb 1.0 does about 1.5mbps max, whereas 2.0 can do 480mbps I believe. I'll let you do the math, but you can figure that it'll be a lot faster.

If a device requires USB 2.0, I dont think it will necessarily work with USB 1.1. USB 2.0 uses different signalling and such.
Now along with the comment of USB 2.0 being backwards compatible, sure it is, it allows for 1.1 devices to be used on a 2.0 port. Not exactly the otherway around (ie. 2.0 devices on 1.1).
Its not like filling the thing would be a big deal. Set it up, and let it run overnight.. shrug.
Re:Do yourself a favor and buy a $15 firewire card. Painless installation since they are basically all the same.

Re:If you already have an Audigy, then you're set, as you can use the Firewire port. I've used my Audigy with a 1st gen iPod for months without a problem, so I don't really understand what you're worried about. If you are that worried, spend the $10 for a Firewire card; you can use the free time to work a couple of hours to pay off the card.:Q
Re:I'm thinking it would take somewhere around 7 hours to do a whole 15gb. Theoretically it should take a lot less, but then it will never work at the highest speed that usb 1.0 can do. Recently I transfered about 6gb of mp3's from one pc to another, via a usb to ethernet converter, and that took me about 3 hours. It should be ok if you do most in one shot and then 20 or so a week like you were stating.

I'm pretty sure your Audigy's Firewire would be able to handle your iPod. Personally, I'm using my Audigy2's firewire port. Its speed is about the same with the on-board Firewire on my 8RDA+. 3 gigs of music in less than 20 mins!

I can leave it to do its own thing fine. I`ll just let it do when im out at work or at a party.
Re:Even with firewire it's not entirely speedy either. I have one and when I hook it up to my mac it still takes a little bit of time to add tracks. It's not going to be an instant flash either way, and it's not like you can't do other things while that's working. If you can't take a little break from your computer to let it do something then you have some problems.
Re:I think it depends. According to Neuros, many USB 1.1 interfaces don't reach the max theoretical limit. They did some tests showing their device's USB 1.1 was only about 1/3 the speed of ipod with firewire.

Re:Ive counted all my music, and i have about 800-900 tracks. Asuming i encode at say 192bit, and the file size is about 6mb average, then it`d take up about 4.5–5.5gb. I would only be adding to that anyway. And i would probably use the remaining couple of GB as a backup storage area for my documents and stuff.
So really, it`d be a once only en-mass transfer, with small file additions and removals every 2-3 weeks or so. Which aint too bad.

15GB is 13.96 GiB.
13.96 GiB * 1024MiB/1GiB * 1/1.5MiB/sec * 1 min / 60 sec * 1 hr / 60 min = 2.65 Hours
Realistally, more like 3.5 hours. Of course its mostly a one time thing.
