How much RAM can handle Win ME? [microsoft knowledge base] [512 mb ram]

Q: I want a 500 MB RAM disc. I also want 500 MB or so left over for use. My machine will not boot with more than 512 MB of RAM, however. Ive already MaxFileCache = 65536. According to I would have no problem to 1GB of RAM. Has anyone successfully installed much on Win ME? If so I would like to hear from you. Thanks!

Re:<< I was under the impression that it was not possible to go over 512MB with ME.

I physically have 640MB but I use the System Configuration utility to limit the amount of memory that Windows uses to 512Mb as per the "Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed (Q253912) in MS Product Support Services.

This available at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q253912&ID=KB;EN-US;Q253912

I can boot up with 64MB but some programs (EZ CD Creator) get that "out of memory" error message so I have to dial the RAM back to 512MB.

It would be great if I could get the 640MB working properly. >>

Well I did the System ini. file fix and everything working fine now. Even EZ CD Creator!

Thanks guys. :D

Re:Try as I may, I could never get W98SE to boot up cleanly with more than installed. This is even with both the VCACHE and/or memory limit tweaks.

The RAM was/is high quality and runs flawlessly under Linux and WXP.

Re:What motherboard do you have?

Intel i81x chipsets won't handle more than 512MB of RAM.

Re:I had the system.ini file all fixed up like they say. I run a MaxFileCache all the time anyway so this isn't my problem.

Re:This (http://www.{$MySite}/guides/viewfaq.html?i=27) FAQ listed under the General Hardware Forum should explain all.
