Q: How to get a DHCP server on my USB Flash Drive bootable?
Anyone know anything about this? I have many links founf online about creating a bootable flash drive, but not just about having an effective working DHCP server.
Re:Puppy Linux (http://www.goosee.com/puppy/index.shtml) installs on 128 mb flash drive. I'm gonna try this one myself.
Re:FlashLinux (http://www.encryptec.net/flashlinux/)
Optimized version based on gentoo that fits on a 256 MB flash drive. Has Firefox/Ximian/Office/Gnome… You could probably easily put a DHCP server on it.
Re:Not seemlingly elluding to Mr. guy point, I say you go with linux on this one.
1
Putting linux on a thumbdrive is doable but make it small (gentoo, debian..whatever….)..this assumes a lot about the host PC mind you.
.2
make it automatically check for hardware
(add every netowrk module you can find to the kernal…hello slow bootups;) )
.3
make it automatically configure these with a static IP address
.4
assume that it will connected with a crossover cable to a switch.
5.
Have it automatically bring up a dhcp server on that link if it can bring it up…
What devious plot do you have hooked up boi?!
Oh, and I only gurarentee that the 1 will work…all the decimals are useless.;)
Re:What would be a good day?
A day that there will be more discussion about Technology rather than the trivial Non-Genuine over chewed remarks.
Intel Vs, AMD
nVidia Vs. ATI
Windows Vs. Linux.
I.E. Vs. Firefox.
And so On and so On. Boring.:disgust:
Each x Vs. y has the scores of Pro and Con Groupies.
Groupies that by themselves never innovative any thing beyond popping the covers from Six Packs.

Providing you have a computer that the Mobo supports in the BIOS Boot from flash drive.
A full Network and Internet capable Win98 SE takes about 440 MB. So you can install it on a 512MB (or better of 1GB) Stick, and put on it a simple software DHCP Server.
But what it is good for???

Good heavens… Having Windows 98SE on a stick.. That would be a waste of a good Flash Drive. ![]()

Can't have DHCP unless you have a network somewhere. What would your FLash Drive be assigning to the computer if there's no network anyway? You can boot off a flash drive but it's not a router so it woudln't have anything to do with DHCP…
I guess I'm confused as to what you want to accomplish.
there is a network up, just sometimes need a dhcp server if the server goes down
Re:LOL never thought of trying to put windows 98 on usb drive. Don't know if that's possible, it being a removable drive etc, but I know you can install linux on one. I have read here of someone doing it with mandrake and I also heard that its unoficially supported with knoppix. Either of those can be configured as a dhcp server.
