How to get WinVNC to work behind my D-Link Router [port router] [virtual network]

Q: Hi guys,

I my DI-604 4 handling my Optimum Online cable, and my buddies and my PC is running on the road, and I wanted the creation of Computing (WinVNC) (http:// Download .com.com/3000-2085-10187948.html? tag = lst-0-2) .

those installed I would be able to key in, starting from any browser anywhere “and http://MYIPADDRESS:5800 remotely

however access to my desktop, I can not get to work.

my ISP DHCP, and now my ip address 192.168.0.101 but to see if the routers configuration page to “http://192.168.0.1″ The status give my ip – currently as 24.45.78.197

24.45.78.197 sounds better, but i cannot get it to work .

can someone to test this link for me? http://24.45.78.197:5800

thanks, any and all Help is always appreciated:) —

Re:ok great thanks, i thought it was just a standalone app, so in that respect its less portable than the web browser version, but faster and better.

thanks!

Re:dont use listen mode just dbl click the vncviewer.exe file or just choose vnc viewer in start menu enter the ip address of the vncserver and away you go. the viewer is an independent file you can put it on a floppy or cd and take it anywhere i ues it for remote admin for some clients and keep a copy in my car :)

oh another thing you may want too look into realvnc its a kinda winvnc hybrid it seems a lot faster to me its maybe placebo though :)

yep all sounds good except i would forward in 5900 and 5901 te viewer is much faster than the browser and allows more than 256 colours. a dmz as far as those soho routers go is simply portforward for all ports to 1 ip. its just more work to secure you pc than port forwarding is.

i'm almost there in terms of questions :)

so how does the viewer program work? i run it in "Listen mode" on my machine, but then how do I connect to my machine remotely? would this require me to download the viewer to the remote machine before I can virtually access my machine?

right now I have dmz enabled and just got it to work using the browser method…i'll work on securing my pc for the moment

Re:arrgh…still having problems…

so i want to set up my local IP within the LAN to, say, 192.168.0.25, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, default gateway to 192.168.0.1
i do this in the TCP/IP settings for my NIC

then in the router configuration web page, i set up a scheme, calling it say "VNC"
the private and public ports should be set to "5900"?
the IP address should be 192.168.0.25?
protocol type is TCP
Always scheduled

If this doesn't work is DMZ a huge security risk?

whats the advantage of using the viewer program?

thanks for the advice!

tim

Re:ahh your not using the viewer porgram :) the view user 5900 and up web based uses 5800 id stick with the viewer program i fi was you :)

and as for forwarding that will depend on your router the documention should have something on port mapping or port forwarding dig around the d-link site for it.

Yes you will have to manually assign the ip to the machine just do in you network connections are set it in the properties of the lan card under tcp/ip protocol.

Hope this helps.

vnc runs on the 5900 – 5910 tcp port range so thats wrong for a start :) basically it starts at 5900 and goes up 1 per desktop so desktop 2 would be 5902 and so on. this is handy to know for multi user linux boxes :) had aclient with 5 peeps on one linux box worked very well indeed was suprised :)

you will also need to forward those ports in from your router into a STATIC lan ip once that is done it will work.

place a 192.168.0.x 255.255.255.0 address with a defautl gateway of 192.168.0.1 on the internal pc that needs the vnc access and forward those ports to the adress you assigned.

how is this done? set up LAN settings manually with this information, but how is forwarding ports accomplished?

hmm, well when i type "http://192.168.0.101:5800" (what currently shows up as my IP, i am able to get to the VNC login screen. anyways, i'll def take your word for it…

thanks again,

tim
