Re:I for one am sorry to see leave. It'll be one less marketer of CDRW drives and that leaves Sony being the other big kid on the block with name recognition and marketing power. I realize there are the other manufacturers (Plextor and Lite-On being this board's favorites) but to consumer Joe and Suzy, Plextor's horrifically overpriced and Lite-On sounds like an offbrand CompUSA loss leader.

Re:I remember hearing about this – just found the c|net article: " ditches add-on CD-RW market" (http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-7480097.html?tag=mn_hd)

Hewlett-Packard will be ditching the CD-RW add-on market. Despite success in sales, said that it would no longer release new models and will stop shipping drives early 2002.

The reason given by the company is that it feels that the market is becoming saturated with CD-RW drives because they are increasingly being included as standard equipment with new computers. The need for consumers to buy an add-on drive is decreasing. 's numbers point to 70-80% of consumer PCs have CD-RWs.

Instead, will be pushing ahead with its DVD+RW products, which are expected to have higher margins and much more room to grow into a mass market. Plus, DVD+RW drives are still able to record CDs.

Not a terrible thing – they'll help bring DVD+RWs into the home. :)

Re:Yes, they are leaving the CD/CD-RW market and will put their efforts into the DVD writer market. If they have a 24x drive that just came out, you have to remember that they made their "exit" announcement only recently and products are planned for several months even before they are released. I wonder if they'll have a "fire sale" on the 24x drives? Hmmm…
