I do not see any other PCs on my network? [workgroup names] [wireless router]

Q: I just have a and a laptop to my existing Windows XP PC.

Both Home.

I can not see the laptop from the PC and the PC from the laptop. I want the printer shared on the PC, so that the laptop can print. But they can not even see eachother.

Steps taken:
1) are the Turing same.

I have tried out the PCs firewall without luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Best Answer: Make sure all the PC's are in the same workgroup. make sure the firewall on all PC's is set to allow print and file sharing. This includes the windows firewall and any 3rd party firewalls (e.g symantec) installed.

I currently have a "master browse" problem that this page diagnosed. The next page tells me how to fix it … doing that now.

Re:I'm going to kind of keep a log here for my use and others in the future.

I jsut read a microsoft document that said the Guest account has to be turned on. On my PC, it was turned off. To get to this setting, Control Pnael -> User Accounts ….. enable guest account.

For simple file sharing, which includes access to the Shared Documents folder, the set of credentials sent by the connecting client are essentially ignored. All access is based on the status of the Guest account on the computer running Windows XP. The Guest account is enabled by default; however, you cannot use it to logon to the computer. As long as the Guest account is enabled as an account, client computers can access shared folders using simple file sharing.

The bold is the important part …. and enabled by default? I'm not so sure.

Re:If it is only your wife and kid and it is OK to maintain low level of security then you can use simple sharing (Simple Fie Sharing offers less LAN security).

The Microsoft page that I linked to before provides a run down of the types of sharings security wise.

For basic sharing you can use the instructions in the link that you posted and if it does not work look at the first link in my previous post.

Re:What does it mean when I don't have the opion in folder options to "Use simple file sharing"?

Re:I'll be checking out those links. Thanks.

I changed the Workgroup to something different. now my PC can see teh laptop. But not the other way arround? I can see the laptop, but it is not accessable according to the pop up. It might be some sort of user permissions issue according to the pop up.

Re:Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what is allowed to be shared.
