I get a wireless signal, but I can not use? [wireless signal] [internet explorer]

Q: My laptop takes an “excellent” in my room and says its connected, but when I open can not open sites.

Is this signal is limited, although it says Im connected?

Best Answer: Firstly , you are using a dongle to connect to the internet then you don't need the wireless function switched on your laptop…Install the dongle and follow the installation instructions …Normally it will leave a desktop shortcut on you screen , just click on it and connect to the internet

If you want to connect your laptop to the internet using a wireless router or a wifi hotspot ( mcdonalds etc etc ) then you'll need to activate your wireless function on your laptop ..To do this there's either a swtich on the front or side of your laptop or you can press the FN key together with F9 ( or another F key ) ..You'll know what F key to press cause it will have a picture on it like a TV transmitter ( f key are the top row of your keyboard )

Re:this is my at school…but my roommate fixed it.

thx anyway.

Re:Yeah, well I thought I would give him the benefit of the doubt :)

And if he is, he probably won't get too far.

Re:Sounds to me he is trying to hijack someone elses wifi.

Re:It probably has WEP or WPA enabled. You can get a signal without the WEP/WPA key, but it won't allow you to do anything.

If you were using XP SP2, you would see pretty easily if it is a WEP, WPA or unencrypted network.

Re:then you should try resetting the actual cable modem…wireless router is working

Re:linksys is the ssid, is this your linksys router/access point you are running or is it some random wireless that you can see?

Re:it just says "linksys"

Re:Well if you would tell us what is the source of the siganl may be someone would be able to help you.
