Best Answer: If you want my personal opinion, I would go with a Dell. You can't beat their hardware support, and their computers are designed very well and last very long. Definitely try to get one with an Intel Core2 Duo processor (just about any of those would be fine), and try for 2GB RAM or more (3-4GB will be good for a long time) if you plan on running Vista (or upgrading to the new 7 when it's out). Any of those software items should be compatible with Vista, so you shouldn't have to worry about that, but if they tell you to use XP and are willing to give you a key to install it (not likely), then do it. XP uses a lot less resources, and even though it's older, it still runs much more smoothly than Vista. I'm pretty sure they don't require the Atheros card, but if they do, Dells typically come with Broadcom cards. You should generally assume the manufacturer doesn't matter since they are all interoperable, for the most part. Just call Dell and tell them you want:
Intel Core2 Duo
2-4 GB RAM
80 GB or better HD (most are around 250 now I think)
and 802.11a/b/g wireless (if necessary, ask at the school if b/g is ok)
