I have advice for a wireless / wired router [wireless router] [electrician]

Q: Which is best? We have the following configuration in our desktops house.

4 wired

(soon. will install wired line in our home on Tuesday. Currently Im using wireless on my desktop 50 + meters from the router. 200kbps internet sucks. Can ” not wait until we subscribe to 3.0mbps DSL and wireless connections. (3.0mbps is the fastest in our area)) 977 503 977 503

2 laptops wireless (802.11g 54Mbps both laptop internal antennas. If possible, I would rather not have to get pcimcia (I I hope that good) wireless adapters (eg, Belkin Pre-N), in case I want a notebook SBA2ZS card down the road) to install

What router would be best for our setup?

Best Answer: Yes, there's absolutely no problem with that setup.

The wireless connection is going to provide access to the internet, while the wired will only be local access between the computers on the LAN. You'll want to make sure that the LAN is set up in the private IP range, and that no default gateway is established on the wired internet connection properties, or it may cause problems when you attempt to access the internet.

If your wireless internet is also on a private IP block (single internet connection coming in to the router, and all wireless clients behind NAT firewall,) you'll want to make sure the LAN nodes are on a different subnet.

An example, if your wireless IP address is 192.168.0.10, then you'd want to put the LAN on 192.168.1.x, or 10.0.0.x, etc. Anything outside of the subnet of the wireless connection.

Re:honestly
belkin, netgear, USR and linksys are all great brands. Some of the older linksys ones have weird problems once in awhile but the wrt54g is the best soho router of the now.

Re:I'm a big fan of the Linksys wrt54g. I haven't had any issues with it, and it's updatable with 3rd party linux distros if you need any more features beyond what Linksys provides with it. Has the 4 port 10/100 switch built in, and I've used probably 5 different manufacturers wireless cards to connect to it, with no issues. Just stay away from version 5.0 of it if possible (in case you want to install a 3rd party distro).
