Q: I have a partition on Win XP. I installed Win 200 Pro on the hard disk partitioned. Now, when I boot my PC it gives me a choice:
1: Win 2000 Pro
2: Win XP Home Edition
Win loads up to 2000 without any problems. But when I load Win XP, that is number 2 and press enter, it comes with an error:
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: 977 503 977 503 WINDOWS SYSTEM32 CONFIG SYSTEMd startup options for Windows 2000, F8.
You can attempt to repair this file by Windows 2000 Setup using the original installation disk or CD-ROM. Select r at first screen to start repair.
Can someone tell me what I done wrong?
Thank you.

Re:WHERE DO I FIND THE ROOT OF THE SYSTEM DRIVE?
Typically that's going to be your "C" drive. It will be whatever drive you already see a NTLDR and NTDetect.com in (I'm going to guess that's the drive you have XP installed on).
The problem would have been created when installing Windows 2000 because it would have replaced the XP ones with the 2K ones and XP cannot load with the older 2K ones.

Re:Thank you for the website. It states that the resolution to my problem is as follows:
"To work around this issue, start the computer in Windows 2000, and then copy the NTLDR and Ntdetect.com files from the I386 folder on the Windows XP CD-ROM to the root of the system drive."
I have XP installed on the C: drive and I installed Win 2000 on the partitioned D: drive. So, I have to start the computer in Win 2000 and copy the files from the XP CD-ROM to the root of the system drive. WHERE DO I FIND THE ROOT OF THE SYSTEM DRIVE?
I did the following:
In command prompt i typed D:\>dir e:
This displayed the directory of e:\ (XP CD-ROM)
Then i typed D:\>copy e:\i386\ntldr
enter
Then i typed D:\>copy e:\i386\ntdeteect.com
enter
The problem has not been resolved.
Can anyone HELP PLEASE!
Thanks

Re:Thanks for the reply. I wasn't aware that the most recent OS had to be installed last. Thanks for the website. Here are the contents of the boot.ini file on Win 2k:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
I really appreciate your help. I really need to get XP up and running again. If i uninstall Win 2k, will that sort the problem out?

Re:sorry but acc. to http://www.microsoft.com/windo…/learnmore/2000xp.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/2000xp.mspx) you need to have installed Win2k first, and then WinXP (ie. latest OS installs last).
It is possible that win2k trounced over the boot information for Winxp – have you tried checking the boot.ini file (usually at c:\boot.ini) – post it contents here.
