Ideas about where cheap Photoshop, Illustrator, Pagemaker get? [advance ideas] [ebay]

Q: I have a friend who runs a nonprofit organization and they try to find (cheap) PageMaker 6.5 or above, Illustrator and Photoshop. Illegal versions are unacceptable.

Is the best bet? Other ideas? He found one of these sites in Eastern Europe, sales of all three for $ 120 and before I had ordered the news to him that it is not legit, so I said I would try to see what I could find.

Thanks in advance!

Pursuing the the Gifts in Kind angle, and in the meanwhile I checked Half-Price Books. Hadn't been in one before. They did have some software, but nothing that would have been expensive to begin with. Mostly stuff like ClickArt 80 billion, Home Carpenter, kids games, etc. I guess each one has different inventory so it could be the luck of the draw.

On the upside I found a DVD with seven Three Stooges episodes for only $7, so that was a plus. :) Oh, well — here in the Seattle area their used software section had quite a bit of expensive software last time I checked.

But you scored on the Stooges :)

Has The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) (free) or Paintshop Pro (http://www.jasc.com/) ($119) been considered?

Perhaps contacting Adobe? They may have a program for Not-For-Profit groups.

Re:I checked, and unlike other vendors, Adobe does not offer charity or non-profit in their licensing program.

Gifts in Kind appears to be a useful resource:

Re:Thanks very much to all for the suggestions. I knew Eastern Europe was a loser and should have realized wasn't going to be a good answer (I bought a copy of some font package a couple years ago and got a copy instead of the genuine article. Fought for two months and couldn't get a refund.)

I'll be checking Techsoup and Half-price books, and see if Photoshop Elements would be good enough.

Excellent suggestions, thanks again!

Re: will get you not-for-resale, academic, or straight warez, even if it's a legal copy the seller may be using a "backup" of it and any logging/spyware could show Adobe the dual use. You might get the rare honest software seller but it's definitely a gamble. Eastern Europe will get you warez.

If there is a Half-Price Books store in your / their area they carry software.

Re:I get a lot of software for my agency at Techsoup (http://techsoup.org/). I'm not sure if they have those products, but the software prices for non-profits are unbeatable there. Also, have him check his local United Way. Some have a Gifts-In-Kind affiliations and you can get very cheap (sometimes free) software from them.

if you have kids in college, or friends w/ kids in college, you can ask them to help you out. photoshop runs for about $50 at my school

I'd recommend against this as academic licenses typically cannot be used for commercial use.

Re:Adobe makes a program called "Photoshop elements" its $99 and has probably 85% of the functionality of photoshop, most people can get away with using it instead of photoshop.

Re:I had checked with Adobe and they don't have a program for non-profits. I'm not familiar with the Adobe products myself, but they said these three are integrated somehow. Ease of use, maybe?
