IE6 Download Dialog Box “open” grayed [tif file] [file associations]

Q: This is a new to me.

The O / S is Win98SE and when you click one. (legal documents online. Tif is an uncompressed picture file), not the option “Open to give” (gray), the only option to save or cancel. According to the user, it recently launched. I have tried everything in IEs Internet Options and checked the “” in Folder Options, and everything looks fine. I think it is something corrupt in the registry. Any ideas?

Oh yes, it is. Tif files that give this problem. JPG pictures and other files work fine. Someone, anyone?

It turns out that an "update" to IE6 was the culprit. Easy fix via regedit.

I do not believe IE supports TIF. Actually I am pretty sure I have always got the option to save it. You have to save it, then open it in an image viewer such as Photoshop.

It works on our other PC's with the same config (IE6 + Win98SE). It opens the (Kodak) image viewer within IE (esentially saves it to a temp folder). I told the user to just click the save option and open it from the desktop. I still think it's something screwey in the Registry.

did you try removing the file association and redoing it?

Yes, tried that. I've done some searching on support.microsoft.com and found nothing. I can't believe that I'm the only one experiencing this problem.

I've also tried changing the security settings (and almost everything else) in the Internet Options control panel.

It's almost like IE is thinking the .tif extension is unsafe (wants you to download instead of open), but even .exe's will allow you to open them. Strange stuff.

Any other ideas?
