Q: Thanks for watching . I just bought and installed Windows Media Center 2004. After installation I bought a TV tuner to add. So if I added, I went to media center to see if it would work, but I have an error saying that the video files are missing . Does anyone know what that means? If so please help me out thanks again

Best Answer: It seems that for some reason, probably enabling ur Nero imageDrive, ur windows Xp got into driver conflicts and is unable to run in normal mode.
As u said, in safe mode, there is no way of enabling drivers (u mentioned being confused about Cd rom enabled, but in SAFE mode basic drivers are enabled, because they don't tend to cause problems)
Safe mode is used to troubleshoot ur computer when there is problem with programs or drivers. I would suggest that u go to device manager (accessible from My Computer Properties window) and disable the Nero Image Drive..
Hope it helps u in anyway
Re:I think these features will probably be in Longhorn as well as the powertools which you can download. MS doesn't want to give away everything so they are restricting this OS to OEM computers. Too bad they do not sell it, I'd probably buy a copy in place of XP since I buy copies of XP once in a while for computers I build.
Re:FYI, ShowShifter (ships with new HP machines) is a pretty good MCE replacement, I've used it before and the CPU load when timeshifting or recording video is pretty minimal on an Athlon 3000+ as it encodes to DivX. You might want to give it a go, but I really don't see how you're going to get MCE 2004 working when it's only supposed to ship with pre-built and certified PCs.
You might get lucky, but I doubt it.
Re:In addition to freevo you can also check out mythtv (http://www.mythtv.org) if your computer is fast enough. In addition to the normal "managed" tv channel stuff that freevo does (it is a good program) it can also do all the extra Time-shifting (pause, rewind, fastforward "live" TV) and other PVR-style stuff.
Please note that the minimal system requirements for high quality viewing would be around 2.0ghz+ cpu( 1.5+ ghz single cpu is fine, but ideally you want dual cpu's OR very fast pentiums) CPU, 512Megs of ram, and most importantly a very fast harddrive. WD 80-120gig 8meg cache at least, better yet 10,000 rpm drive, better yet a 10,000 in raid0, better yet SCSI drives etc etc. (your symitanious encoding/writing/decode/reading mpeg2 (or like types) 720×480 stream for best quality.
Also it does support some types of hardware mpeg encoders so that takes a huge burden off of your cpu.
Just a FYI.

AFAIK you can only legally buy Media Center Edition preinstalled on a PC.

The part about the "special hardware" amuses me. The only special thing in the Media Centers is supported TV tuner card and a remote. Otherwise the rest of the hardware on most Media Centers I've seen is kinda ho-hum. Well except for that neat Gateway system that doesn't actually seem to be made by Gateway (as I infer from this review (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/34205.html) of an identical piece of hardware being sold under another name in England).
Heck, they could bundle a card and a remote together and sell it to us if they were worried we wouldn't use "qualified" hardware. Why is MS being so weird about this OS? If they had released it to us early adopters and hobbyists to play with on our own hardware, maybe it wouldn't have been such a dismal failure in the marketplace. Guess I'll have to much around with Freevo instead when I build myself a poor man's TiVo in the near future. Their loss.
Re:Media Center only supports qualified hardware. The drivers for Media Center are not publically available…….some "friend"

Re:No I bought the software off of a computer maintaince place that my friend owns…he doesn't know whats up with this either…
Re:How exactly did you "buy and install Windows Media Center 2004"? I'm assuming you bought a PC installed with Media Center. Have you contacted the PC manufacturer?
Re:Yes this is exactly what it says " Files needed to display video are missing or corrupt. Please restart Media Center and/ or restart the computer. If the problem presists, go to help for additional help."
Re:Can you be more specific about the error message?
Re:If anyone can help me out please do so…I will appericate it so much
thanks
