Q: I just did a u0026quot; to install what happens to your machine u0026quot; on this PC especially my secondary hdd is not installed. When I stopped and install the drive, I noticed that it is not in the computer in the menu and the dev manager said it wasnt a drive letter assigned. There is a photo DevManger pic (). Please note that the second hdd is double jumpers, as when I called WD technical support for another sure they said that my bios / mobo didnt support their jerseys. You think I would remove the second jumper and going to the default slave jumper? Thanks.

Uh oh…I have a 4.3 GB Western Digital drive, and it's been running fine for almost 2 years. No bad sectors yet. Maybe I'm just lucky, but it seems like the local computer store also has always had very good success with these drives, as have many of my friends who have WD drives.

Re:Have you tried putting your WD on one cable and the other one on a different cable? Both as masters? Primary Master and Secondary Master? I wouldn't have them on the same cable anyway if your actually using the ATA100 capabilities of your 40gig.
I think it was Compaq's that have a Quantum Fireball fix for something on their computers with those drives, just in case thats the kind of comp you have.
But if you didn't change the jumpers on the Quantum, it is still trying to be master. If you do want to run it as a slave you will have to jumper it that way. Quantum should have detailed pin outs of the jumper configs if it isn't on the drive itself.

Re:Your DevManager pic link doesn't work either, lol.
Just one more remote idea. Go into ControlPanel/TweakUI/MyComputer and make sure that the D drive box is checked.
Otherwise like Badthad said, run the WDC diagnostic on it. The WDCs have a bad rep for quality — so good luck.
If you end up having to wipe the WDC 7200, or getting an RMA new one, make that your C: drive because it is mucho faster than the Quantum.

Re:guy is correct. If the drive is detected by BIOS and not assigned a drive letter by the OS, then there is a problem with the file system on the drive. Have you run the WDD diag util on it?

Re:Have you formated the drive yet? It sound like you haven't. Windows won't assign a drive letter until you format the drive with a file system it recognizes.

Re:BIOS does detect the drive, it's picked up in windows too. The problem is (as you can see in that screenshot) is that the disk is not being assigned a disk letter. Also, this disk has worked before, if you're wondering, and the bios is showing exactly what it showed before i did the recovery. Thanks.
Re:That's what I'd try, set up the second drive as slave, go into your bios and detect it. If it does, you should be ok.
