Internal network speed test program? [network speed test] [network icon]

Q: I know there are tests that test how fast your Internet connection is.

What I want to know is, there are programs out there that allow you to test how fast your LAN? I know you mouse over the in your system tray and it will tell you what your speed. BUT, that does not tell how fast the network is actually going.

Any help would be great.

Best Answer: I bought a similar computer off somebody for $50 a while back and I thought $50 was a reasonable price for something so ancient. I'm not using it anymore though. I couldn't stand how slow it was, I bought a new computer.

does anyone know of a network speed testing tool for linux? we're trying to get a gigabit cluster up and going, but don't seem to be getting more than 100Mbit…

thanks

The one jackMDS linked to has a linux client.

Re:what about a network testing tool for linux? red hat 9 to be specific…

Re:du meter works really well but its not free i bought it anyway

Re:My personal favorite is DU-Meter. There's also a sum tool too so you measure just how much data you're actually sending and receiving.

Re:guy, netperf. But be careful – any program really also tests the end systems, and as such the results are likely to not really be representative of the speed your network infrastructure is delivering to you. If your network infrastructure is an Ethernet switch, chances are it really can move the data just fine, and your end PCs are what's limiting the LAN performance.

Re:The following is considered as one of the standards to measure Network ?Speed? and debug it.

Link to: A FREE Utility for Network Troubleshooting from NetIQ! (http://www.ixiacom.com/products/performance_applications/pa_display.php?skey=pa_q_check)).

You install the master program on one computer, and End point Client on all other computers on the Network.

Re:-Ethereal

-NetIq's test utility…

Also, you can be "lazy as hell" and just get http://www.analogx.com 's netstatlive, and Transfer a file to a neighboring PC and read what it says.

<–even lazier and uses the windows netowrking percentage reading to get his bearings:o
