Q: I have a variable . and have always thought a static one would be better.
For different hosting online game player in particular.
Re:Isn't a dynamic one safer??
no difference.
Re:They are the same thing.
Re:How about security issues.
Isn't a dynamic one safer??
Re:if you are going to be running a server, then a static address would be best, but if you have a dynamic one, you can register a subdomain at dyndns.org (http://dyndns.org/) (subdomains are free).

Originally posted by: guy I got a variable one…and have always thought a static one would be better. For hosting several-player online games specifically. Silly me. I thought he was referring to internal IP addresses. If he's talking WAN ip addresses, he's kind of at the mercy of his ISP's. Many ISP's don't offer static IP addresses.
ANd there's Comcast pro that claims it's a static address, but it's really a long-term DHCP lease.
HEY, don't knock Comcast Pro. that's what I have. ya, it's only 6 month leases, but don't restart that cable modem or ur gonna be assigned a new ip address. ![]()
Re:Even if you have a dynamic IP, you can still host games/servers with a dynamics DNS service like dyndns.com (http://www.dyndns.com/). Some charge but I think there are a few that are still free.

Re:Can beat a static address. Unless you are naughty and don't want things pointing back to you.
Re:If you are going to host anything, you need a static IP address, else how would people find your server if it changes all the time. It would be a pain in the ars to have to keep informing people whjat your no address is.
The cheap alternatives you pay extra for. Just get a static IP.

Re:It depends what your needs are. If you have domain names where you have to rely on them pointing to a specific IP, then it's useful. If the people are just hitting an IP address, it probably won't change very often. You could always set up a mechanism where the server reports its IP address somewhere that is always acessible.
If it's just a bunch of people you know, then dynamic is ok.
If it's a business or "public" server, you may want static.
Re:static rocks for me.. i just need to register a domain and use that instead. i don't wanna have to deal with IP's at all.
Re:If you are hosting games, or acting as a server of any kind, static is better. If you just need connectivity, its easier for your ISP to dynamically assign your IP. This is because, they are counting on the fact that you won't always be online, so they don't have to have enough IPs to give out to all of their customers.
Re:Wouldn't it be simpler with static?
<– has static.
Re:dynamic vs static.
for small local lans i always recommend static if the person knows what he's doing.
also, if you are going to forward a port static is better.
just my opinion of course.
Re:For on-line games that you are hosting, yes a static IP would be nice.
