Is anyone using one of those USB to Ethernet adapters? [linksys] [notebook]

Q: I have a that I have. Ive seen these adapters from and Microsoft, but I was wondering how was the performance. VAT, some of them say Ehternet speeds up to 100Mbps . thats funny . USB supports only 12Mbps.

Re:I picked one up years ago at a clearance sale, its only 10 meg but it has saved me in a few occasions.

Re:Here in Argentina US Dollars are expensive, so I'm trying to get the best quality I can for around $30, no more. USB-to-Ethernet seems a good choice.
One question tho, if I connect the adaptor to a 100Mbps switch, the connection icon will display 100 but only transfer at 10?

Re:The vast majority of home networks are Either 10Mbits/s or 100Mbits/s.
I own a couple of USB NICs both of which support 100Mbits/s connections. It simply means that my switch doesnt have to run in mixed mode. The maximum throughput is around 10Mbits/s but it's easier on my infrastructure.

Where I live, PCMCIA adaptors are cheaper than USB ones. I don't think you'll have problems with either type though.

Re:Well, actually I could get a PCMCIA, but I spent a lot of money recently re-building my home network and I wanted something on the cheap side.
I would probably go for the one from , altough the SMC model doesn't look too bad either.
Checking Amazon, I saw that all of them are below $30, so I'm a bit undecided. The Microsoft unit looks nice, but the website says "Windows 2000 support is limited"… I don't know what that means.

Re:These adaptors are very useful to connect computers to an existing Network without a need to open the computer.

They are cheap and easy to use, Example for such an adaptor:

Example: EZ CONNECT COMPACT USB 10/100 CONVERTER. (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10315385&hdwt=30701&loc=101)

They work at a little less then 10Mb/sec.

Networking is currently the ?Last Frontier? of home computing and thus unknown to many computer users. As a result it suffers from many ?Marketing Ploys? that are on the border of ?misleading? the consumers.

When I asked about the 100Mb/sec claim, I was told that they mean it can be connected to 100 Mb/sec. systems, not that it work at 100Mb/sec.

To the best of my knowledge USB 2.0 Ethernet Adaptors are currently not available.

Re:I use them at work for my laptop users. They are fine, especially if you are using it for internet mainly. You are correct tho, they are not tru 100 mbps.

Are they USB 2.0 maybe? Anyway, why not just buy an ethernet pc card instead? Then you really would get 100Mbps, wouldn't you? (I've always bought machines with built-in ethernet, so I've never had to worry about such things.)
