Q: I recently bought a 40m CAT 5 cable 100Mbps network only to find that it does not work with just two computer. (Doh!)
I can not return, is there a way I can switch the wires and make it a crossover, or anything else? Im not afraid to get nitty gritty.
Thanks!
Dan
Re:A Solution (not as good) but similar to Scott?s suggestion.
Find a CAT5 coupler and a short Crossover Cable.
Put the Coupler on one hand of the cable, plug the Corssover into to it, the result is a long Crossover.
Just trying my luck in case you can find a coupler, and short Crossover in ?rural down under?. In the US we have street corner Radio Shacks that sell this couplers.
Otherwise instructions for CAT5 here:
How to make Network cables. (http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable3.htm)
Re:Thanks scott, but I can't get out (Rural area) and I really need this done in a hurry. I don't mind cutting because we don't have 3 computers.
Re:I've estabilished that its a 586A, as the wires (at the connectors) go like this on both ends.
1 WHT
2 GRN
3 WHT
4 BLU
5 BLU
6 ORG
7 WHT
8 BRN
Re:Your best bet, and this is no sh!t, would be to buy a crossover adapter / pigtail.
It's got an RJ45 on one end, a jack on the other end, and it SHOULD be Category certified. They are available from prettty much anywere that'd sell cables & such.
Don't cut the cable you have, adapt it for another couple bucks.
That way you can use the cable either way…no crimping, no muss, no fuss.
Good Luck
Scott
