Q: I have Windows XP Pro running. Im looking for a way to prevent a file is deleted. For example, Im on a college network and if I wanted to open a file on a disk on the network, but wanted to make sure was not removed by other contributors, how can I do? (Can or should I make a windows program to do this?)
Best Answer: Have a look at alternative data streams. They wont stop someone who was determined, but there's not really a better way of hiding data from casual users in windows. No-one knows they exist. They are specific to NTFS, so don't expect them to use on all flash drives. http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/182…
Of course, there's a much better way, but it's been done very well before. I doubt you'd do anything new. You have an encrypted file, which really contains a filesystem. When someone enters the key or password, it gets mounted as volume in 'My Computer' the same way a CD would. TrueCrypt and others use this method.
Vista has improved access control lists which you could use, but anyone logged in as you would see them.

Re:if the file is always in use … it cannot be deleted ….
ie … if you have a shell account sign on and continuously redownload the file … if you can set a speed limmit set it really low so it doesnt eat any bandwith on the network.

Re:The solution was given above. Use NTFS and use security settings to set file or its folder as read only for all users but yourself. It will override network permissions.

No, I am talking about putting a file on a public server drive that belongs to the university. In other words, I have no control over the network settings. Any other advice?
By what method are you putting it up? Do you have a shell account that it is ftp/scp-ed into?
