Q: Ok, I know this sounds stupid, but a girl I work with a password set on their computer (so her children can not sign), but now she does not remember what your password is: o made a
I google search but all I could find was to set up half boot disk (or something like that), but it is fairly computer illiterate, so there are easy ways to reset a password? I guess I do not know 0.
not even know they have the original OS disk to do a format.
And yes, I will tell her to write the password the next time: laugh:
Thanks
Best Answer: Firstly windows has an account called "administrator" which doesn't normally show up on the welcome screen but you can get to it either by booting in safe mode (it does show up on the welcome screen when in safe mode) or by pressing ctrl+alt+del at the welcome screen to get an old fassioned login dialog. Often this account will have no password on it.
If the administrator account is locked out or has a password on it then there is a third party password reset and account unlocking tool available from http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/
Bear in mind that resetting a users password either through control panel or using third party tools will cause loss of any files that user owns which are encrypted with windows encryption and any passwords windows has saved.

Re:Good thing she had XP Pro. You can only log-on with "Administrator" in Safe Mode when using XP Home Edition.

Re:For future reference, it is also very easy in XP to use TweakUI for that. With TweakUI it matters not whether you are logged in as Administrator or the named user that is also the Administrator. (As in a sole user machine.)

When run properly I've never had Peter Nordahl's password reset utility not work. The problem most people run into is that they don't do the process correctly – its definatley not intuitive.
But also standard safemode, log in as administrator (which on most consumer computers has no password set) and change passwords from there.

Only administrators can schedule tasks to run as other users, including SYSTEM so if you can do that then you can also just change the password the normal way.

Re:At the logon screen, press CTRL ALT DEL twice, then try the username Administrator with a blank password. You may need to do this in Safe Mode and stand on one foot. Once logged on, you can reset the password on any account. If there were files encrypted with the Encrypting File System, they will never open again, but that's not something a lot of people would do.
