Q Ive got a number of high-end CAD programs that are supported for Win2K/NT (NT5, NT4) only.
Others ported for Win XP 98/SE/ME only.
Which family is doing?
Best Answer: You could try a "repair install" of the OS. Insert the XP CD and instead of a full installation which removes everything, choose the repair option which will replace the missing files you need to start the computer properly.

Re:Basically Windows XP has a Windows 2000 kernel.
For example Windows 2000 -> 5.00.2195
Windows XP -> 5.10.2600
Now lets take Windows 95 & 98 & 98 SE & ME
Windows 95 -> 4.00.950 (or A, B,C)
Windows 98 -> 4.10.1998
Windows 98SE -> 4.10.2222
Windows ME -> 4.90.3000
Basically the last 3 versions of Windows 9x came from Windows 95…. the kernel/core was just tweaked till its fullest extent (well what MS calls tweaking I personally call bloating and NO i am not some MS hater…. its just true. Windows 95 was 65 meg install (minimum) Windows ME is more like a 850 meg install).
So Windows XP is based off of the Windows 2000 core. Same version scheme as the Windows 9x line.
Re:<< I know windows 2000 occasionally slipped & refered to it's self as NT 5.0, does XP slip at all & refer to it's self as NT 5.1? >>
Uh… i guess… if you consider RIGHTCLICK on MYCOMPUTER, select PROPERTIES… as "slipping up"
Re:I know windows 2000 occasionally slipped & refered to it's self as NT 5.0, does XP slip at all & refer to it's self as NT 5.1?
Re:Thanx, that clears it up.
Re:NT
I think its refered to as NT 5.1
Re:<< XP is NT 5.1 >>
Yeap.
For the purposes of the sort of thing you are looking at it's virtually identical to Win2000 (NT5.0)
