Q: Is KDE or GNOME is part of the operating system. ALS, the parsing of the kernel mode too right?

well they really sit beside a window manager, you can run a wm w/o a de, or a de w/o a wm, but the latter would not be a very nice experience
i use blackbox, a window manager. kde and gnome are not the type of interface i prefer, plus they take like 50MB of ram whereas bb takes like one. plus bb looks nice =)

Re:Those are purely optional desktop manager packages that are not part of the kernel as far as I know. Both came with my Redhat 7.2 2-CD download. So far the only thing I have had to download separately has been the blackbox window manager.
