Q: I had a TNT2 Ultra video card in my mobo before I bought my ATI Iwill. I have the ATI and began getting three beeps when the first cold start boot. The computer would then do nothing. I would reset the computer from the front reset button and the computer loads each time OK. If I restart the computer from the desktop, the OK again. I can even turn off the computer, wait, and restart it fine. This problem occurs only on a cold start when the computer is off for a while. Ive tried different power connectors to the board to no avail. I wrote ATI, Power Color and Iwill. Ive done all the BIOS and driver update rumble they suggested, all to no avail. Even with my monitor connected to the same thing happens so its not the monitor. Unfortunately, I have no other available on my computer to see if ATI put the mobo or the ATI card. Iwill suggested I increase the VIO. Ive tried both settings with no success. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Re:I was looking at it like why would I pay $100 for a new mobo with my current processor/RAM when I could use that $100 to upgrade to somewhere in the P4 2.5 range. That would entail a new mobo and new RAM. Maybe this will work out and it will be the card. Argh.

Re:Thanks for the help. I do have someone who has a computer I could try it in. I would like to do that because if it STILL beeps, that tells me it is the card. If it does not, the only other problem would be the motherboard (I would think 431W is enough for my system). If it is the mobo, it might be a reason to upgrade, even though I really did not want to spend $400-$600 for one right now.

Re:Hmmm for some reason your motherboard is having a hard time detecting the 9700 card. And your old TNT2 worked just fine. This leads me to think it must be the card.
Do you still have a warrenty on it? If so I would try and get another one. I know its alot of trouble but thats my last thought, that is other than get another motherboard 
.
If at all possible try it in another machine…. But I know some times its just not possible to do.

Re:ARGH. No luck. I pulled the card out, switched the power connector to a different one, and reseated the board. Still the darn beeps. I noticed that it beeped even if I turn the computer off and wait for a second to turn it on again. It apparently only does not do it if I warm boot it through a windows restart.

Re:Haven't tried to reseat it yet. I believe the 12v (4-pin connector from the PSU I assume?) is connected tightly and correctly.

I don't know of if the BIOS update on the graphics card would do any good or if theres even one out for it.
Also try and set the AGP setting to the lowest.

Also, yes on the latest mobo update (from Feb 2002) and I guess I have not checked on a BIOS update for the GPU.
Re:Hmm I would reset that card. It sounds like its not making a good connection… And if you can find another card that AGP I would put it in and see what happens. If it doesnt then the card seems to be the problem.
And you did say you did BIOS updates for both the card and motherboard right.
Re:I was also going to mention that it is frustrating because one time out of ten, the computer will cold boot OK. Overall, it does not seem to make a difference if my monitor is in standby mode, off, or on. This beeping is really getting on my nerves!
Re:Yes, they are both AGP cards. Unfortunately, I sold my TNT2 card. I had the TNT2 in this same mobo prior to putting in the ATI and I did not have this problem. The Iwill is set to 4x AGP with a 64MB aperature if that makes any difference.
