Laptop wireless card / home-networking – WEP issues – help! [wireless network cards] [compuers]

Q: Im posting this for a friend . any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. :)

i bought a wireless g network system for my house. I bought a Microsoft base station router, two , and a desktop card. I have 4 in my house. the base station hooks up to my main computer. one of the laptops and other desktop work fine. The second laptop is havving issues. It detects the base, however, when I try to connect, says the incorrect WEP key even though I am 200% sure I entered the key correctly. Ive tried everything you could think of, such as changing the cards he netowrk betweent 2 laptops, resetting the router, changing the WEP key, WEP security off, and so on. If anyone can provide me any information I would appreciate it. Thanks

Best Answer: From what you describe it sounds like the wireless adapter is not working correctly. I'd suggest you contact HP support and tell them that the wireless device in your laptop is not working correctly. If that seems like a waste of time, then go get a wireless adapter that's either a USB type N, or a PC Card type N and see what happens using that card instead of the built in unit.

Re:I guess guy and I have a common friend even though I don't know who murphy is. What a small world :D Anyhow, I went and checked out his network and the problem is really wierd. The laptop gives an "incorrect key" error even when WEP is off on the router. He even tried formatting and reinstalling windows xp and it still has the same problem. Anyone seen this type of problem before?

Do I need it? May be MAC Filtering, Unique SSID, and manual assignment of IPs is enough to secure my ?Gold Stash?.:gift:

Re:Go into your wireless card's properties in the Device Manager, and look at the Advanced Tab. Check everthing on the list, to be sure it matches the settings in your router. I found that my new card was defaulting to a different channel and RTS threshhold than my router, so a quick change there solved the problem. Hope this helps.
